Geo Filtering is still possible

I see that geo filtering is not sorted, since players can still exclude european/australian/asian/whatnot servers in their host file, preventing connects to these continents. That basically gives US based players an advantage, since they can chose only to connect to servers in the US.

Is there any official word from 343i on this yet?

That’s not geo filtering, that’s just ā€œHalo is an American gameā€
That’s also an issue with MCC because if you’re not matching from inside the US, you take ages to match with jackshyt.

Every other region is 2nd class to murica for Halo matchmaking. Has been for a long time now. No idea why they don’t just let us match with preferred servers because we definitely have the population.

Odd. I remember the constant issues with lag and connectivity being a problem with Halo 3 / 5. Strange that a developer is not able to provide server selection in a game released in 2022.

If anyone of 343i could chime in here, that’d be great.

I’ve seen them post the occasional pinned topic as an update but I’ve never seen them reply to someone’s comment on here which is a shame.

Okay, well that is just sad to see that the devs are obviously so out of touch with the community.

Incorrect you get the ā€œno data center detectedā€ message when you do this.

A few ppl have posted on here and said they are still able to edit the host file, however I cant confirm this as never used that method. However I can confirm that geo filter via my router no longer works and I receive that error if I try.

I saw a tweet about geo-filtering via host files yesterday evening and gave it a try. Did not work.

Just saying some people have claimed that they have still got it working. I’m not one of those that likes to dismiss something just because another person doesn’t experience the same thing.

I understand that everyone has a different experience due to many factors, but I play from Mexico and i don’t have any problems either finding a game or with the ping etc… And it’s the third (or fourth) world we’re talking about here lol.

But isn’t Mexico near to the American region? Connecting from half a world or a whole world away is another experience altogether.

Oh yes, it’s actually in North America.

An apology, people do not usually refer to ā€œAmericaā€ as a continent, that’s why they invented ā€œthe americasā€ to be able to refer to places other than the United States.

You are right, in Mexico I am even closer to some servers than from some cities in the United States. So it makes sense.

It still works at the router level. They seem to have really only blocked it via the host file method.

So we have totally conflicting stories then. There are ppl that claim host file still works and those that say it doesn’t…also ppl claim router level works and ppl like myself that know it doesn’t.

For the router method, may be it depends on the type of router and location. I’m based in the UK, geo filter EU only servers via Netduma and it definitely doesn’t work.

What I will say is that I’m getting approx 85% EU servers without geo filter anyway, so it’s not the end of the world.

Edit: if the host file and/or some router methods still work, and if what 343i claimed about geo filter bad actors is true, then may be that’s one of the reasons why we still get desync. I don’t believe what they say anyway so that’s probably highly unlikely.

cant get any matches in aus like I use to, since update in ranked get ā€˜ā€˜not enough players in your region’’ message sometimes

Probably because the game is down to 6k peak players. 343 has finally succeeded in killing Halo.
