Here’s a short rundown of Gamertag classifications that I have developed over the past decade as an active XBL member.
There is little to no research or professional backing in my findings, this is pure opinion so be warned: don’t look to much into this.
Clan Tags
(ex. FaZe Gunnar, PMS QueenBee, KSI Sleepy)
range from very good to awful wannabes (kids usually are the grunts in clans), seems like a flip of the coin, although I would say from experience its 6:4 ration of above average to bad. They are likely to trash talk in the name of their clan.
Kiddie Names
(ex. DragonWolfBoi, YOLOMLGPlaya, OMGuSuck)
usually poor in skill and behavior, but that’s not to blame. most are new to shooters, but not new to profanity.
Cannabis Users
(ex. BigBlazer420, HighAsFudge420,)
usually adults, 20s-30s, casual gamers who aren’t awful since they put so many hours into gaming while partaking in recreational…hobbies…usually fair mannered.
Girl Names
(ex. GamerGirl, ChunLiQT)
Similar to clans in the respect they range from awful to “surprisingly decent”. Most decent ones are partied up with a group of “white knights” looking to boost their own egos. They are generally friendly alone, but with white knights surrounding them, they will trash talk.
Goofy Names
(ex. MegaTuna, MyNameJeff,)
another flip of the coin when it comes to skill. usually fair mannered.
Try Hards
(ex. OB3Y MY BR, F3AR MY SCOPE, GodlikeSkills )
Usually a cocky name is made since they can some-what back it up. They will trash talk and whine.
What about people with so many X’s in their names?

*(Xx ReptileBlood xX, Oo Dino oO, i reFlex i)*Aside from gamers who used these characters because their gamertag was taken, these players usually take the game seriously and with that, are more likely to trash talk.
I honestly have to generally agree with your list and points not because I agree with the points or ideas but more this has just generally been my experience online when I look at gamertags in connection with performance. In reference to the girl gamers thing I typically only run into two types, the ones that absolutely destroy anyone who stands in their way or the ones who are pretty terrible but are still having a blast playing with friends. Very rarely do I ever run into one that is average although I’m sure they exist.
On a slightly different topic I’m curious to hear what you or others might gather from my gamertag just from a first impression basis: “Trigger Happy M”. Without looking at my stats what category do you think I fall into?
Additional back story to my gamertag: When I was much younger I use to play a lot of Laser Tag at a place where you would choose an alias to play as. Now on the laser blaster connected to your pack it would give you a full HUD including health, energy levels, power ups and who you killed or were killed by. In addition at the top it would say " You are -insert alias-" which I thought was really cool. Now one of the power ups you could equip in this laser tag place was “Rapid fire” by tagging a certain “gem” after which you traded 1 credit for the power up. I ALWAYS used rapid fire. Then after we got our post carnage report papers showing full stats for all players after the game where everyone else might use 500 to 600 rounds in a match I usually managed to use an insane 6,000 rounds or shots fired in a match. Somebody saw this and called me trigger happy and it stuck. Plus my gun from that point would say “You are Trigger Happy”.
I don’t think you really have anything here. It just amounted to grouping a few types of names, saying “this one is isn’t skilled”, “this one is casual” and for the rest it was basically, “could be anything”. Names don’t determine skill level, you can’t judge if someone will be good or bad by seeing their name.
Lol, my name just came up, allthough I am not a tryhard. I do so so I guess.
Honestly, StevetheHaloGod isn’t much better lol.

I lean towards uninspired lack of creativity. I wanted this name, oh it’s taken… -Yoink- that… 14grfger4t42 Peter… yea that’s nice… call me Peter guys.

I would say a FPS enthusiast. Therefore, I’d say you have some intermediate knowledge of the game.

This is an amusing thread to read. And I agree with others that skill goes much deeper than generic GT themes though.
I do have to say/admit that since Halo 2 I had 4 x’s in my GT (xxVIPERMANxx) because the one I wanted was taken. I’m competitive and do take the more seriously (most of the time)…but I don’t trash talk. I’ve (obviously) since changed it, but I do miss seeing the x’s sometimes. lol
