I see so many people on here generally posting the idea: “The gameplay in H5 is amazing, but it’s way too competitive!”
It’s contradicting, though. It’s too competitive BECAUSE of the gameplay. Yes, we can argue all day about the lack of fun gametypes… But let’s look at grifball. Now with grifball having the same competitive gameplay as the rest of Halo 5, after playing it for a little, just kills a lot of the fun vibe that grifball had before. I put in Reach, and it was so much more fun. Its pacing is way better in my opinion, and is way less stressful than playing H5’s grifball.
I used to think, “Man, Halo 5 would be so much more fun if it just had more gametypes.” Which is true, to an extent. But it really isn’t the only problem. There’s that underlying problem that Halo 5 is way too competitive for casual players to enjoy, and the reason is because it’s gameplay. At least, in my eyes. After playing it since release, and still feeling this way, and seeing SO MANY others feeling the same way (Population dropping, all my friends stopped playing it within a month, etc.) it’s just the only explanation.
Another random note: The linear, boring map design in Halo 5 is a result of its gameplay, as well.
Thoughts? Just trying to start up a different discussion other than the usual “343i sucks, this new update makes no sense” or whatever.

no. you don’t need boring maps for competitive play.
For me the problem is ongoing stat tracking. I don’t obsess over stats to be a champion player per se. I look at my stats as a validation of being a worthwhile teammate, more positive than negative. Unfortunately this means that I must play sweaty all day everyday. There is no matchmaking option without stat tracking where I can relax and experiment with my load out instead of doing my same ole try hard tactics. I don’t mind losing or going negative every now and then and don’t whine when I do, but it bothers me that there is NO escape from everything I do going on my stat sheet, when there are times where I want to not care and just experiment with tactics and weapons, but there is no option.

The map design is 100% influenced by the gameplay. They’re all designed to accommodate for sprinting, ground-pounding, thrusting, and clamber.
The only thing not influenced by that, or shouldn’t be at least, is art design and scenery.
If you think the maps are linear you are playing the maps wrong just saying, there are enough traversal options and shortcuts that the maps basically are the opposite of linear.
And no the gameplay does not make a game competitive, human nature does. If you put two groups against each other competitive play will ALWAYS occur. Even in social playlists the competitive factor is there. The difference is, is that a win or loss does not effect anything. There really is nothing to lose (unless you are a stat person) and with that load shed they can be in a way more relaxed. The game will always be competitive to an extent and when the wins/losses actually effect something, you damn well will be sure that people will take it more seriously.
