Gameplay closer to canon with Halo 5?

I was in line Day One for Halo: Combat Evolved and each following Halo but, the books always eluded to the Spartans’ abilities as something more.

Aren’t we (theoretically) finally seeing how Spartans have always “played” in this futuristic Halo Universe?

My opinion: I welcome what was always there in the story but now can be gameplay with the technological advances from 14 years ago.

Not really, no. Actually, they are too slow.

I know Spartans are also depicted strong in the books (I haven’t read many, only partially read Broken Circle, which so far doesn’t feature Spartans), and I want to see Spartans actually flip over vehicles using their arms and hands. But, that would prevent the player from shooting when flipping a vehicle. Maybe they could do something where it uses a Thruster on their boots and move their feet under the vehicle and it flips it over. Am I thinking too much with that, or does that make sence? O-O

When I can fight unarmed rather than being a helpless puppy without a weapon, disarm a close attacker, hide behind and return fire from cover, fight with a combat knife outside of assassinations, and all weapons can deliver headshots, then yes, we will have canon accurate combat.

MJOLNIR armor also have “auto-aim” functionality built into the HUD. Let’s use canon as a premise for a game. We can all have aim-bots and just pull triggers to get kills. We’ll all be pro!

Spartans have armor and abilities to counter the Covenant technology, of which they are on par. Spartans win off of strategy and, according to the books, a bit of luck. Never do the books say that Spartans can…

  • Sprint unlimited distances without ever being winded or fatigued.
  • Ground pound.
  • Recharge shields only when not running.
  • The list goes on…The books also portray Spartans as being very stealthy. Do you suggest we turn Halo into a stealth game?

Before there were Halo books, there was Halo : CE. The gameplay comes first. Without that gameplay no books would have been sold. But sure, you guys feel free to praise 343 while they kill that legacy. After all, THE BOOKS MADE THEM DO IT!!

There are so many flaws in your argument I don’t even know where to start…

You say gameplay comes first but before you said ground and pound, sprinting without getting winded and such wasn’t in the novels… thats a catch 22 right there. If it clearly exists in the game and the game comes first, then why would it matter if it were never mentioned in the novels???

It seems closer to canon Spartan compared to then others, yes. More agile, more speedy, so on.

If you can’t understand what I was saying, that’s on you. People are using canon as a basis for the alleged “Haloness!! Yay Super Spartanzz level 3!” of Halo 5. I was explaining why this was not a good idea, and how nothing from Halo 5 is in the canon. The bromance from Post game, isn’t even in the books… weird.

Folks are reaching too far and over-generalizing the books to justify the monstrosity that is Halo 5.

There you go again. You can’t claim gameplay is the basis of canon then complain about Halo 5’s stuff because it isn’t in the books. Your own logic says it both IS and IS NOT canon for both being a game and not having anything from the books.

You are doing nothing but whining Halo 5 isn’t copy paste Halo 2 and 3.

I am NOT defending Halo 5, books or no books. I don’t like the GAMEPLAY. Players should stop justifying Halo 5 GAMEPLAY based on the books. The abilities in Halo 5 aren’t in the books, so the canon argument is moot. It’s empty justification. This is simple logic.

I can see you will try to twist my words because you have no logical rebuttal. Its okay, others understand what I’m saying.

But you yourself claimed that gameplay comes first before the books. You then proceeded to berate Halo 5’s canon because it has things not mentioned in the books. If gameplay comes before books, then either it doesn’t matter that it was never mentioned in the books at all, thus negating your point, or it rolls belly up as a catch 22 toward being both canon and non-canon.

You are doing nothing but complain. I dont think you know what logic means, by the way.

Lol, I got caught feeding the trolls. There should be signs in here.

It wouldn’t quite fit in with the combat we have since two hits with melee kills anybody. Perhaps it would work to have a knife you could pull out by pressing up on the D-Pad. It would need a bit of a lunge range, but much shorter than sword lunge range, and it would have to be either instant kill but leaves you vulnerable in a short killing animation like with Far Cry 3’s Knife Takedowns, or be a 2 or 3 hit kill but you swing and stab the knife much faster than melee with guns equipped.

If we had backup knives I would rather it be like Far Cry’s takedowns where you are stuck in place for a couple seconds while the killing animation plays, that way it couldn’t be abused by running around and stabbing everyone before they can react. It would be nice to have something to fall back on when you run out of ammo in the heat of battle.

I second this motion. I love my CQC fightin.

Actually Halo: The Fall of Reach released before Halo CE if I remember correctly.

I don’t remember ground pound being in canon.
Nor do I remember Spartans being said to look down the sights of their weapon (really, the old scope actually makes more canonical sense).

The Fall of Reach did come out before CE, one month. I should have stated that the popularity of the books was incubated by the success of the games. Nobody in the early 2000s was fussing about the games not being close enough to the books. They were too busy playing, enjoying, and making life-long friendships based around the love of the GAME.

I still stand by the fact that the books wouldn’t have been popular without the games. They were supplemental to the campaign, and a way to go deeper into the Halo universe. The games have NEVER been based on the books.

Erm… I’m almost certain the old zoom was technically supposed to be you looking through the scope, etc… Maybe Im wrong, but why design it to look similar to the scope if not?

I was explaining why this was not a good idea, and how nothing from Halo 5 is in the canon. The bromance from Post game, isn’t even in the books… weird.

If gameplay comes before books, then either it doesn’t matter that it was never mentioned in the books at all, thus negating your point, or it rolls belly up as a catch 22 toward being both canon and non-canon.

-uses logical fallacy

There might have been a misunderstanding and I’ll try to clear it up.

The way I see it, he’s trying to make two different points, but within the same post.

Premise: People are defending Halo 5’s gameplay because of canon

Fallacy 1: Halo 5’s gameplay elements have never been in canon

Fallacy 2: Halo’s gameplay has never been based upon (book-)canon anyways

Consequence: Halo 5 cannot be defended by canon (because it doesn’t fit) nor should it be (because it has no relevance)

Note that this is no criticism of Halo 5 in and of itself but merely disproving the canon-argument.

I also tried to explain objectively, regardless of my personal opinion. Please don’t hate me if I didn’t succeed.
