GameInformer Halo 5: Guardians Audio & Music Video

Enjoy.

Hell yes. Davidge was lame. Jinnouchi is bringing the awesome for Halo 5.

I really like the opportunity that having a Chief component of the campaign and Lock component is bringing to the music.

Long live the Gregorian monk chants.

Is there any other way to watch this? Everytime I want to check gameinformer, I got that -Yoink- every time:

Davidge was not lame. Most of the Halo 4 tracks were fantastic and suffered due to poor placement within the campaign and story. Yet when they were placed right, examples include Nemesis for the Didact’s awakening to Green and Blue playing with Cortana’s death…breathtaking.

This video made my day.

And I love Halo 4’s soundtrack too.

I agree and would also add poor sound mixing. I always felt like the music was too quiet during the majority of the cut scenes in Halo 4.

Davidge was pretty lame, the fact that davidge did way more halo 4 music and yet the best tracks that people like are always jinnouchis is not a coincidence. A lot of people prefer the volume 2 of halo 4s music, and jinnouchi is now the lead for a reason. The female vocals he picked were garbage, everyone I knew made fun of the menu music, one of my favorite memories from halo 4 is my friends waiting for customs to start and we were all “singing” the halo 4 menu theme, it was great: “AAAAAAAEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUU, AAAAAAAWWWWEEEEEEHHHHHHHAAAAAAAHHHHHHHEEEEEAAAAAAAAEEEEEUUUUUUUWWWAAAAYYYYEEEEWWWWWAAAAAAYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOO!” Complete garbage. This armor was the most generic scifi music ever. The to galaxy “theme” was extremely weak: lowest higher lower higher lower highest lower: Wow, what a strong theme. So complicated, sounds like a one year old randomly hitting keys as his hand rolls left and right across a piano. Nemisis is great, arrival is alright but too generic action movie-y, I would say that the cut epilogue theme in full was his best, but it was barely even used. I’m glad he’s gone, 343 knows his overall reception was negative, because his music did not fit halo nor did it consistently match it’s legendary music quality.

I tend to simply chuckle at the generic criticism because, ironically, it is fairly generic itself. I can’t say I’ve heard Davidge’s style elsewhere or that it was too action movie-esqe. I enjoyed the vocals whenever they showed up. The main menus female vocals may be a weak spot, but the rest of the track itself was enjoyable. Music is subjective and all, but when your complaints just roll off as hyperbole, ie calling his music garbage, lowest of the low and generic…I can’t take them seriously.

I’m also perplexed by “This armor was the most generic scifi music ever.” I assume you mean album, but even then I can’t really point to a sci-fi collection of music from film, games or what have you that sounded similar. Really, only a portion of Ascendancy sounded like the riffs of the band Ash’s contribution to Republic Commando and I enjoyed that OST so I can’t complain.

Obviously, I disagree. Davidge had his moments, but much of his music was simplistic and forgettable. Very little of it had any character reflective of the Halo universe. If I wanted a score straight from the post-Zimmer film score wasteland, I would listen to a Hans Zimmer soundtrack. Regardless, placement is a huge part of a good score. I wouldn’t say that all of his work was poor. Green and Blue is a good piece (emotional solo cello and all). To Galaxy is solid as well. As for Nemesis… Davidge demonstrated that he has listened to the Blade Runner soundtrack, but makes less interesting music than Vangelis. Good for him.

I will admit that my biggest problem with his work is Arrival. Replacing the unique and energetic Warthog Run with mind-numbingly tedious, “cinematic” 4 chords is not a good move. That track couldn’t be less unique if he had tried. Jinnouchi’s work with 117 was far more dynamic, complex and fitting by comparison. It is patently obvious who has a background in composition and who has one in production.

I thought Arrival and To Galaxy were pretty awesome.

Now THIS is negative criticism that I can get behind.

Sounds a lot better, I just hope they have some tracks that get stuck in my head after hearing them one time. Most of Marty’s tracks had that magic to them.

Except I didn’t say it was the lowest of low quality, I said that it couldn’t consistently keep it’s music quality and as such was all over the place and had music that wasn’t good enough, but also DID have some music that was, but most was not. “This armour” isn’t even remotely close to any other songs in the game, I literally went “what the -Yoink- is this music” when I reached that part of the mission. Nemesis is a fantastic song for didact, it’s like an evil twist on the old theme, because it retains elements of the forerunner music from the past, whereas “this armor” doesn’t even make sense. The music when you first get to reqiuem sets the stage for some great new but still forerunner related music, them “this armor” comes along and has so many beeps and boops it sounds like a toy robot is shouting at me from the end of a hallway. When I said garbage, it’s because that female menu vocal is indeed garbage, if I had the option to turn it off I would do it without giving a second glance, just like taking out the trash. When I think halo 4 ost, I think of 117, then mantis, then midnight never forget, then nemesis, arrival, so on. His music was generic because I forgot it having listened to the ost many times, and always remembering jinnouchis stuff before I even knew who either of them were, or that there were two composers. Davidge music reminds me of tron, or destiny, or generic scifi anything. Lockes music is how you use technology to make music, not "this armor"s beeps and boops, it sounds like a less distorted version of daft punk or deadmau5 music, and no, that isn’t a compliment. He excelled at physical instruments, but lacked in making complex and super interesting rhythms and songs as he had a theme of “note up, note down” in his songs like to galaxy and arrival, he lacked consistent themes and quality. Green and blue, this armour, and pylons do not sound like they belong together, whereas odsts music can reach all these places and emotions while still being a core set due to the consistent base instruments and themes, with the changing rythm of the percussion guiding the instruments to new places, and gaining instruments based on how far the song got, like adding a guitar, or adding that echoey effect to show how alone rookie is as tge song echoes on with no answer. Halo 4 didn’t have this, it felt like a bunch of songs he had wrote and picked out, rather than designed to be a set for a specific scene.

You do know that Jinnouchi made the main menu music and everyone I know though the main menu music was one of best pieces overall. I also don’t get where got from that the music reception was overall negative. I would say the reception was mixed because more old school fans and purist did not like the change, but there just as many people that like the change up and that the soundtrack still kept a little bit of the classic sound. I agree that Jinnouchi is better and had the better songs and happy that he is the lead and really loving the sound of Halo 5. Locks theme makes my hair stand up every time.
