What do you mean you were able to play without Gold before? Almost everything in Halo 5 has always required Gold to play (the exception being campaign). You may have been on a Gold trial that expired. Or maybe someone else’s account on your console had Gold and the Live sharing feature allowed you to use it with your account, but that person’s subscription ran out. Either way, it’s impossible to play Halo 5 multiplayer without Gold, so even if you weren’t paying for Gold you were using it if you played Halo 5.
