Game wont start

Hi,

About a year ago or so i got halo wars definitive edition on my windows 10 pc. The game ran great with almost no issues. several months on however the game has stopped turning on at all. i click the tile to open the game and i get a bordered full screen with a black background and the word Halo. then it closes. no error report nothing i can see in any logs anywhere. i made sure i was connected to the internet. i tried disconnecting from the internet. ive tried running it with the xbox app running and not running. launching from the xbox app and the windows home screen. ive tried moving it from hard drive to hard drive to ssd and to another ssd both by moving it under settings and apps and by uninstalling and reinstalling it.

ive had an extremely frustrating time considering that the game actually ran great when i first got it. ive been on to microsoft support who eventually referred me here after not being able to solve the problem. if anyone here suffered this issue or knows a fix please let me know as im at my wits end. i really really just want to sit back from time to time and enjoy some nostalgia for a game i used to love in its hayday on the 360.

if it helps my system specs are :
windows 10
gtx 1080
16gb ram
intel i7 6700k
various hard drives. ive checked and both windows and my nvidia drivers are up to date

I have this frustrating issue as well. Sometimes I am actually able to load the game and sometimes I see the black window and instant “crash”. That being said, I have found a temporary workaround that works 100% of the time. It is still annoying because I never know when the game will load or crash and I have to repeat this process. Also, this only works because I have games tied to my account that are not installed on my system.

  1. Open Microsoft Store app and navigate to “My library”. (You do not have to be signed in).
  2. Under the “games” section find a game that is not installed on your system (this assumes you have a game that is not installed on your system. Killer Instinct is my example of choice because it is free).
  3. Click download (You do not have to download the game) navigate to the download section and click on pause, followed by cancel download.
  4. Close the Store app.
  5. Launch Halo Wars (It should launch)
    As I said, this process works for me 100% of the time but sometimes needs to be repeated (for whatever reason). This could be a clue to why the game refuses to launch sometimes. This process is essentially re-authentication for the apps within the Store. Could be 343 issue or Microsoft (Windows) or both.

I have this problem as well…any real solutions? the only solution i have found to work is uninstall and reinstall and then it breaks(does the same) days later. very annoying

This is an issue that needs to be fixed by 343i/Microsoft.

all you need to do is get the halo luancher from the microsoft store

I have this same problem and none of the workaround work for me. Halo Launcher does not work, also downloading Killer Instinct does not work, Also uninstall and reinstall does not work, also reset game does not work.

Someone, please help.

Okay, I made it past the crashing by removing the Halo Launcher app but now I’m stuck at press any key to continue, it never gets past this point.

This is happening to me now… Any fix anyone can direct me to?

This was happening to me, cause was the Halo App, uninstalling them allowed the game to launch.
