game won't load - sign in/renew subscription error

Help! I went to play Halo 5 yesterday (after a few weeks off), and as soon as I try and load the game I get the following error message:

sign in or renew the subscription: It looks like you’re not signed in as the subscription holder for this game. Sign in to Xbox Live, or renew the subscription in the Xbox Store. (0x803f900a)

I have the game disc in the console. I’ve tried logging into and out of my profile. I’ve tried the hard reset (holding the power button, unplugging, etc). I’ve talked to xbox support, who confirmed my xbox live subscription is current and doesn’t expire until 2/2018. I spent about 30 minutes with xbox support last night, and all they could do was direct me here…so I’m hoping someone can help! Thanks in advance!

Hmm okay. Couple questions for you:

  1. Can you play any other Xbox Live game that requires Xbox Live Gold at all? Or do you run into the same issue there?
  2. Can you try logging into a different account on your console and seeing if Halo 5 launches that way?

Snickerdoodle -

  1. I can play other Xbox Live games, and had no issues with online multiplayer…I tried Call of Duty and Forza and online play worked fine for both.
  2. I’ll try a different account and report back

The fix was not what I thought

My xbox sits “vertically” on my entertainment center. Apparently most of the time it can read discs without issue that way, but when I laid the console flat, removed the Halo 5 disc and put it back in, the issue corrected itself.

This has actually happened two more times since my original post, and each time it was solved by laying the console horizontal and reinserting the disc.
