With infinite going towards service game design to provided updating content for game pass many of us fear the worst.
However as we saw with gears tactics game pass has another effect on games.
Will we see smaller spin off titles set inside the universe.
Perhaps the long wanted flood horror game or a new ODST game. My dream would be a long 40 hour cinematic campaign with wide linear levels and open hub sections that focuses on high fidelity presentation and a classic feel of play. Perhaps a game as grey team far behind enemy lines trying to scavange and survive and fortify bases or black team leading up to their defeat to the didact.
If infinite is a decade long subscription game with more advanced movement perhaps single player experiences for the various sub communities is a way forward for the franchise.
Any ideas, issues or dreams in relation to gamepass halo spinoffs?
It would be nice to see the Flood return or get an ODST 2. Would love to see a game around Red Team. Their options with a platform like this are limitless. My issues are this:
In five years and whats rumored to be the most expensive game ever made, 343i couldn’t finish the game. A build that is weeks old, 4 months from launch should be done. What that means is, if they can’t finish the base game in 5 years, how likely are we to get something like ODST 2 or a Flood game (Especially with a T rating)?
This brings up more concerns because if the game isn’t finished, they’re going to spend more time trying to fix/complete it, instead of working on new content. We saw a similar thing happen to Anthem when they had to scrap their roadmap completely because they just couldn’t get the work done.
The biggest problem: install base. Xbox has a tiny install base. For Gamepass to work and make money for the platform, they need people buying the new box and signing up for the service. Gamepass will grow on PC, but not by the margins they need (Xbox One games pale in comparison to PC offerings). Aaron Greenburg recently admitted that Gamepass isn’t making money and, whether anyone likes it or not, the presentation of Infinite killed any momentum Series X had. In fact, most available data shows Series X selling worse than Xbox One. It’s going to be hard to justify full blown ODST 2 or Reach style spinoffs that release for a $10 subscription service that isn’t making them money. The only way I can see them investing heavily in anything other than the inevitable Battle Royale mode is if the F2P stuff just rakes in money from the cash shop.
More Halo is always great and I would love to see 10 years of new stories/scenarios, but in my eyes 343 just can’t handle it.
I’m not completely against the concept of live-service games. I still think that they have a lot of potential if done right. As much flak as Destiny 2 gets for how they launched and the current state of the game, year 2 was actually really good. You got a big expansion in Fall, then three mini expansions until the next year’s Fall expansion. It was really good except that it took a huge amount of resources - Bungie needed a lot of extra help from High Moon and Vicarious Visions, two studios under Activision. Once they left, they couldn’t sustain that content schedule anymore especially with their ancient engine, and resorted to content starved season passes.
Infinite doesn’t have to subscribe to that model. Diablo 3 and Path of Exile, while entirely different genres, have the concept of seasons/leagues. D3 refreshes the leaderboards and adds limited time items. PoE goes a step further and adds new systems and mechanics to the world. IO Interactive’s ambitious plans for their Hitman trilogy revolve around the “World of Assassination” concept. All the content from Hitman 1 got ported over into the Hitman 2 engine for free, and all the content from the first two will be ported to Hitman 3 when it launches. 343 could implement a straightforward version of that, where Infinite is the base and new content (from full campaigns to mini-DLC) get added to this base over time.
A battlepass for multiplayer also makes sense for monetization - and isn’t inherently bad either. It could go anywhere from Fortnite or Apex to Siege or Valorant, to Gears 5. It all depends on how 343 implements it. MCC’s system pretty much eliminated FOMO and it isn’t grindy at all. It’s my favorite by far and has me a little excited for Infinite.

343i doesn’t have to be the developer.

That would probably be best for everyone at this point. They’ve proven they can’t get the work done and the two trailers prior to the show set the bar too high. At least for them.
