Ive played every game mode in Halo Ware and decided to them into a tiers based on skill. Starting from top to bottom with 10 being highest in required skill.
1v1 Standard - “10” - This is the most challenging of the Game mode with the most current competition. The maps are far more complex and detailed then any other game type. This was the main focul point of halo wars and was given the most time in the production stages of the game. There is simply no teams left in 2v2 n 3v3 that could give as good of a game as the high level 1v1 players. All the best players still try and make appearences. The 1v1 leaderboards are the most sought after and take the most skill to obtain.
2v2 Standard - “7” - This is the 2nd most challenging Game mode. Though boosting has taken away nearly all the legit competition there are some people who still compete. Usually the best players in this game type are those who have the most game played. Not nearly as much competive play as 1v1, but still enough to get a decent game.
2v2 n 3v3 UA - 6.5 - Competitive and complex you always will find a good game. Just make sure you now how to win if you teammate resigns. Alot of people still play and enjoy this playtype. Just hope your teammate has a mic.
3v3 Standard - “6” - This game mode is hurt by only having 3 maps. Also the game was not balanced for 3v3, it was balanced for 1v1, so leader combos make alot of situations unfair. Little to none competition left so its impossible to find a challenging game without playing 20 low level games 1st. Very simple and easy to learn. Forge in 3v3 is the by far the easiest leader to play/learn in all the game types.
DeathMatch - 5 - Alot fun it speeds up the game and takes aways the complexity of economy. More for fun then challenge. But you still can find competition in 1v1 mode.
Keep Away - 3 - Fun but no one to play competitevly against.
Tug Of War - 3 - Fun but again no one to play competitevly against.
Reinforcements - 0 - This game modes comes down to luck as your units come out in a lottery that was poorly designed. No skill required to play, just luck. Always in “low pop” its more of something fun to scrim then play legit.

The balance between the leaders/units. In 1v1 every unit is viable, in competive 3v3 its gauss/PT.
Brute and Anders are overused. Noone ever builds grunts/cyclops (EHG and suicide grunts just for hooks). Gauss is op vs covy. Covy scouts dont get built either.
Plus there are tons of glitches, worst is probably the canni glitch.
I dont want to say that you cant play this game anymore, neither do I want to say that Halo Wars is the most riddiculous RTS game ever made, its just that if youre used to SC2 or LoL you kinda miss the patches here^^

honor guards and suis are both used in high level…just saying

Every units is used in 1v1. Mighty Icy uses grunts alot vs cov and UNSC. I have even sceen cyclops being used to heal cobras. Actually the forge won that game. Its near impossible to kill 3 fully upgraded spartan cobra with cyclops healing them. Especially when they get stars. By then end of that game he had 3 fully star’d spartan cobras. They took out 5 tanks…in thier 1st shot.

Yeah I know im a little newbie and cant really talk about high level play with all you pros, but still, since the game wasnt patched for so long now, there have to be balancing issues. even the halo wars meta has to evolve a little bit…
and just because someone managed to outplay someone else with anti meta units it doesnt mean that the unit is as viable as the standart units.
