Gain some Knowledge before Hating on X1

OP

Edit 6/19/2013
New changes to X1 policies

If you are to to lazy here you go.

1.An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

2.Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360

No more sharing games with 10 family members though :frowning:

Good move by MS or Bad?
Are you happy now and will you be getting the X1?
Is Kinect included a deal breaker for you?
Discuss

Yea I don’t hate the Kinect I actually use it all them time when I watch Netflix or rent a movie. I think if you had a job you wouldn’t care so much.

  1. Kinect is required and is what is driving the price of the X-bone to $499.
  2. Online is required.
  3. No analog support.
  4. Can’t rent disk based games.
  5. Rights to a disk can only be transferred once.
  6. Did I mention its $499 and not $399.
  7. Borrowing and sharing games with friends is overly complicated.
  8. It’s not as open of a platform as the PS4.

The X1 is not a consumer friendly product at all and I don’t support it. Also when I buy a copy of a game I should own the rights to that copy fully and I should be able to do what ever I want with it when I want to.

You usually make such level headed/interesting posts, this wasn’t one of them.

Some parts of your post are flat out wrong/misleading.

Which ones? If I’m wrong on something please by all means correct me.

Making the kinect mandatory is an unpopular decision, and I wish it wasn’t.

However, what it will do is allow game developers to develop fluid functionality (especially if voice recognition is as much improved as the camera) for the kinect with an assurance that people will be able to use it.

The privacy issues have already been shown to be misinformation. I still expect the xbox and ps to have similar used game policies. Required online is a poor decision imo. Requiring a disk check to play an installed game should be fine. For the most part, I just see this as Microsoft being tone deaf on the pr front.

I don’t need an Xbox One. I already have a PC.

Hey thanks for this Carnage. I hope when/if people actually read the whole thing they might change their minds a bit, but then again they might not.

I look forward to seeing what developers come up with since there will be more of a market for the Kinect.

The X1 has more of a potential for success then the naysayers believe.

It will always monitor you.
Report you to the police if you play pirated material on it.

Yeah, to be honest, Microsoft is taking a huge risk. They don’t understand that restrictions suck, and well. For me a long time fan of Xbox, I am going to be getting a PS4.

MS just plain went too far with restrictions, and I really hate them for it. I understand they don’t want people to do the things they do, it’s ALWAYS about money.

It seems MS is being pushed to do the right thing, and by doing such will feel bad reputation for such.

I still look forward to see what’s more to come, but if things don’t change, I might not even get one. What if I don’t have an internet connection? I am basically screwed, lets say, I have just moved to a new place, and I can’t afford internet for a while, my X1 is just a paper weight that can’t do what it’s main purpose is, play video games. This isn’t a console it’s a media machine with added capabilities of playing video games.

I may get one I may not. I am a die hard Halo fan, and I don’t want the series to die because of MS trying to remain on the good side of money hungry companies.

As someone who has read the whole thing, I am still against buying an Xbox One.

To give an analogy on the Kinect issue. If you wanted to buy a laptop, and laptop A and B had all the functionality you wanted, but laptop A is charging you an extra $100 for hardware you won’t use; which one would you want to purchase? (Remember, many gamers really don’t want to use the kinect, even if you yourself do)

Another perplexing problem is that you cannot, physically, disconnect the kinect device entirely. The reason for that has NOT been explained anywhere, and is a major reason people are rightfully suspicious. And if you think turning off the kinect feature on your dashboard is going to protect your privacy, then you obviously don’t understand online electronics.

Don’t call it conspiracy theory either. Its already been proven that companies and government illegally spy on us.

Even if they solve the always-online DRM issue by letting you play off the disc, the kinect problem is still going to sway huge swathes of people to convert to PS4 (just on the price difference alone).

Sorry, I’m still sticking with the PS4.

You know, I find it somewhat hilarious that everybody feels the need to say how bad and rude Playstation fans are after the results of E3. Sort of reminds me about how bad and rude Xbox fans were when the PS3 came around.

My main concern with the Xbox One is the 24 hour check in and what that means down the line. When the servers shut down, does that mean I lose the ability to play my games online? Major Nelson has said something close to no, but the fact there has not been a direct answer to this is perplexing. When there is one, I will likely make a final decision.

I don’t think so. Microsoft definitely has a way to disable the DRM and I don’t think they would shaft the Xbox One users. Plus they will probably support it even after its generation is over, like the 360 getting at least another five years.

Well if they don’t want to shaft anybody, or make it seem like they want to shaft anybody, they should just come out and say, “You can play your games offline”. As of now, you can play offline for 24 hours but it will stop after that time has passed. That seems ridiculous.

And this is why i am looking at purchasing a ps4, hopefully my christmas present!!!

1. This has been done so that developers can design their games with the Kinect features in mind. A lot of devs currently can’t risk making games with Kinect technology because they will be alienating the people who don’t have it. What is the solution to that? Make everyone have it. Do I like the Kinect? God no, but they are making it accessible to everyone, and that will allow devs more space to work with.
2. Microsoft are apparently reconsidering this.
3. It’s 2013, if you only have an analog TV, why are you trying to play an Xbox One? I’m sorry, I can’t agree with you here.
4. Implying you can with Steam.
5. Can’t even do this with Steam.
6. $499 because of the Kinect. PS4 would be the same price if PS Move was mandatory.
7. Can’t borrow or share games on Steam.
8. It has restrictions so that developers, publishers and Microsoft don’t lose out on too much money.

The Xbox One is not a consumer console, it is the middle grounds between consumer, dev, publisher and Microsoft. If you feel upset that Microsoft are trying to keep everyone happy then by all means keep crying about it. This is why the restrictions are currently like this, Microsoft have plans to make it slightly more consumer friendly but ultimately this is how the console will be.

When you buy a game from Steam, you don’t own jack. You own the digital rights to the game, but they can be taken from you in an instant. Why don’t you complain about that? Oh, because you don’t understand how Steam works.
Steam allows for massive discounts on games simply because it is all digital, Microsoft knows this and are trying to compete with steam by pushing digital sales. Continue crying by all means, it doesn’t take a genius to see what Microsoft are trying to do.

[deleted]

and this is why everyone should buy a ps4

The damage has already been done. Even if they do fix the issues I will not be buying it. A company shouldn’t be forgiven at all for things like this. They should be made to pay the price for their mistakes. I am voting with my dollar this time. I don’t need halo anymore. I follow bungie and they are on ps4. Good luck with halo 5 guys. You better hope they don’t screw that one up too.

PS4 is going to be the best console. I cant wait for it, though i cant preorder it as i will probably get it at christmas

> Halo CEA had Kinect features, so 343i alienated us? Kinect is an alternative way to play games/use features. I can use a gun by looking stupid, or by using a controller. Both will work, one just leaves you with a bit more dignity.

But the Kinect had little role to play in Halo CEA, I’m talking about for instance Dead Rising 3, how if you speak too loudly you will alert Zombies. Only people with Kinect would be allowed this option, if DR3 was on the Xbox 360 it would be alienating people.

> What? Steam is horrible. Why should we care if steam can do something or not? Who says we even use steam? This is like defending -Yoink!- in America, because France legalized it.

How exactly is Steam horrible? You get games massively discounted, constant sales, free weekends for games, etc. Steam is amazing, if you can’t see that then I’m sorry for you.
As for your example, that is a poor one. It’s like defending gay marriage in America because France legalised it. It is the right thing to do, whether you like it or not. Steam isn’t massively popular/successful for no reason.

> Then it shouldn’t be mandatory.

Again, it allows developers more space to work with, they have wider possibilities with the Kinect being mandatory. Like it or not, that is the case.

I read the article, and these were all PC versions of the game. Piracy on console is another thing all together. Another thing you failed to realise is that most of these “hilarious” ways, do not make the game unplayable.

> Of course it is a consumer console! Developers can’t buy 1 billion consoles (lol), can they? We the consumers buy their products, so we the consumers have the right to complain, or “cry” as you put it, about it.

I shall elaborate. The Xbox One isn’t just a consumer console, it isn’t like previous generations where the consumer comes first. Microsoft have made the Xbox One with everyone in mind, Devs, Publishers, Consumers and themselves. The PS4 is more of a consumer console, and the Wii U is the most consumer friendly console I know.

> Why the heck should I care about steam? You can’t refer to another product that does exactly the same thing, and expect us to stop complaining. So what if companies use child labour, does that mean your local supermarket should be allowed to do the same?

You should care about Steam because it is the future of gaming. Your examples make no sense because Steam isn’t a bad thing, it is a good thing.

> Microsoft can allow digital sales if they want to. Heck, they can make Halo 5 $40 on their digital sales with all these restrictions, and Halo 5 as $60 at my local shop, and I’ll be happy. Microsoft is completely disregarding consumer rights.

Microsoft have allowed digital sales, but they can’t lower prices because of the used-game market. That is why Steam is so successful, there is no used-game market, so they don’t have to worry about charging more because only one person owns the right to the game and once bought it can’t be sold back. They can afford constant sales because of this.

If you knew how Steam worked then you would realise the Xbox One really is a good thing. They just need to wriggle out a few issues.
