Future of the Halo Universe

Would you retcon the novels & comics as well, or just the games?

343 cannot just ditch halo infinite campaign wise. I won’t allow it. They sold infinite as the redemption of halo and it hasn’t earned that title yet in my opinion. They don’t have to stick to it for 10 years. They just need to stick with what they’ve got for a little bit. They already have the tools, and they should know how to use them seeing that they made the halo infinite campaign. I have some experience with game dev and I really think that a campaign DLC is completely doable.
I understand that the slipspace engine is hard to work with, but they’ve gotten this far, surely they can go a little farther, knowing what they know now having made the halo infinite base campaign. If they’re really having troubles with the slipspace engine that they just can’t find a way to solve, they should open it up to the community. There are so many people in the halo community who would be eager to check out the slipspace engine and help find solutions to issues in development, myself included. 343 Is going through a lot of change right now and personally, I don’t think they’re going to make it without the help of the community. 343 needs to become open, and transparent all the way.
I’ve known that they aren’t planning to make a future campaign DLC and I’m not ok with that. Currently I’m writing a concept script for a DLC involving atriox’ return. It wouldn’t have to involve the endless, or the unsc infinity returning, it could just be a campaign focused on atriox returning and the remnants of the unsc having to become unified to overcome. Ideally the DLC would come with an additional area to the open world, and reoccuring openworld events to keep the environment feeling alive and fun even after finishing the game.
I could genuinely go on about this topic for hours and I’ve even emailed 343 myself trying to get someone’s attention. I mean, who’s to say they won’t just end up making another disappointing game if they start over? Who’s to say they won’t completely screw up again? Over the past decade 343 has bounced from one idea to the next over and over, both in and out of development. If they start making a brand new game right now, after just barely getting their cards straight, they are going to find themselves in the same situation. 343 needs to buckle down for a while, make campaign dlc’s and prepare for the new game in the background. Not only would this keep the communities interest active, but it would also give team members valuable expirience and ideas. A master can make a masterpiece with any tools. If 343 can learn to use the slipspace engine well, they will have immeasurable sucsess with the unreal engine in my oppinion.
On another note, making DLC’s will obviously bring in money. Money they can use for the development of their next game. If 343 just uses what they have now and the funds they get from microsoft, they’ll come up shorthanded. There’s been a massive loss of trust between 343 and microsoft, and I don’t think microsoft values 343 as much these days. If they really want to have success with their next game, they need to stick to halo infinite now and start preparing themselves.
The gameplay of halo infinite was exhilarating, the main issues were the lack of diversity in the missions, open world, activities, and the unsatisfying story. These are all things they can fix. Things they can deliver on. They won’t have to focus on creating an entire engine, or building a game from scratch. It will just be game development, creating the campaign assets and putting them together. Even with the assets they have right now they could make an entirely new area of the map, and completely new missions.
Obviously building a campaign DLC is no simple task, but if you can’t pull together to make a DLC, how are you going to build an entire game? We waited so long for infinite and despite its shortcomings, it is a great game. I can’t stand by as they ditch the campaign development for infinite. I can’t stand by and wait 7 years for the next great halo disappointment. If I have to make the DLC all by myself, I will, they’d just have to give me the chance. I’ll do anything in my power to keep 343 working on halo infinite’s campaigns.

I’m sorry to tell you, but DLC/expansions are NEVER happening. Jason Schreier, the most legit industry insider, broke the scoop that campaign DLC was never happening. We also broke the scoop that 343 is moving Halo over to Unreal Engine. So thus, Infinite is not lasting 10 years. We can continue the storyline Infinite set up, but will be a new game.

Obviously they both.
Keeping the eu based on the games would only continue the issues that a retcon would attempt to solve.

Would be a damn shame. IF that were to ever happen, I would want them to leave the Forerunner Saga intact. It’s so distant from the current story, and is the best written narrative in all of Halo, I wouldn’t want the to erase it.

Not really.
The story wouldnt vanish and your enjoyment of it wasnt routed in it being canonical , if it is then it isnt as well written as you believe.
I certainly wouldnt put it in bears top works personally.
Regardless on one opinion of the saga the impact it has had on the series has been a negative one.
The franchise would benefit from being unshakled to these narrative beats that never got developed properly in the mainline series.
They changed the fundimental approach to narrative and it clearly failed to resonate with the wider halo audience so for the good of the games it needs ro be retconned in the same way it retconned prior work.

Can you elaborate on

? I dont see how it is but genuinely curious why one would make that comment.

As for it being distinct for many that would be an issue that it was out of the existing canons character and retconned much of the foundational material of halo. While also creating more incongruity than it resolved.

I’d very much enjoy it regardless if it was canon or not, as it’s extremely well written. Would be bummed if it would be removed from the canon, as if expanded the deeper fiction. I would enjoy for that to remain intact. But yeah, overall I’m thinking either don’t reboot anything is the best option, or if they are gonna reboot, reboot the entire IP.

Fair enough.

For me it didnt expand the fiction.
It rebooted the fiction.
Altered it at its core.
And removed much of the qualia that made the halo mythos so endearing and exciting for me as a fan.

I enjoy the saga they were serviceable books that tried their best to reconcile the new version of halo with the one that propelled itself into the zeitgeist.
Bear did an admirable job in trying to rectify all the inconsistencies in the 343verse.
Despite failing to plug all the holes, he did manage to turn much of the plot into a fun fantasy romp.

Sadly the shoehorning of things in an attempt to appease veteran lore fans and the oversight from 343i, ironically the reverse of bungie’s blunder of ignoring auxiliary media, ultimately detracted from much of Bears narrative and pros.

So many unnecessary asides or overly predictable twists just to get the fledgling retcon to not collapse under the weight of its own contradictions.

Personally would argue fall, onyx, cole or any of the ferret novels understand and expand upon the base of halo far mor effectively. And many books are better paced and written than the saga.
Although I wiuld attribute much of the sagas weaknesses to oversight not to bear as his prior work speaks volumes.

Onxy, Harvest or many of the short stories for example are brilliantly composed and kelly G has shown she can do incredible things under tight restrictions.
Her continuing of the forerunner saga was far less convoluted due to not having to justify sweeping changes or introducing major contrivances in order to make sense.

Ultimately, the forerunner saga reboot was a victim of itself. Not being able to do anything of real worth or impact ,besides explain away some of the most interesting aspects of halos lore.
So if we were to reboot I would think it makes most sense to do so by simply sidelining the prior reboot to “star wars legends” status and continuing in the vein of the lore that established halo and played a part in the franchises rise to ubiquity.

To each their own. I think Bear wrote an excellent trilogy that elevated Halo more. He did an excellent job revealing Forerunner society & what led to their downfall. Also really including the Precursors, showing that there’s something even greater than the Forerunners. Overall, I enjoy the trilogy a great deal, and think it benefitted Halo as a whole.

@Moditor_026 if you were to just retcon/reboot everything 343 has done, where would you go from after Halo 3?

@TRUe_REDEMPTI0N
Off the cuff?
Humanity rebuilding.
Arrbiter rebuilding.
Chief lost in space.
Oni and halsey dealing with the knowledge of forerunners being humanity.
The search for the dawn.
The world for spartans in a post war era.
Privateering.
Space pirates and trading.
The fight to consolidate control of the rings that remain.
Oni replacing the master chief.
Insurrection.
And so many other avenues.

Edit, apologies I missed the notification for your prior response.

@Moditor_026 Would’ve been interesting to see if they stuck with the original Forerunner direction, and see what that would mean for us. If we are determined/fated to repeat ourselves and become the Forerunners once again or if we are able to forge our own future. Even though I’m cool with the direction, this idea could’ve been interesting. Would you carry the Banished over? They’re honestly a pretty cool post-war enemy.

I like to think the whole gameplay loop would have supported us dictating our own destiny ironically enough haha.
The thing about a reboot is concept like laskey, infinity and the banished could be really fun if they were features of the lore rather than focal points. A bit less precedence.
Cause its hard to raise the stakes while making these grand sweeping space opera naratives character peices.
Even prometheans as oni using forerunner tech to make a spartan succesor would have cool implications without making the universe feel small and revolving around a handful of characters.
Play as a young blank slate character we enlist and go through boot camp survive an impossible mission and oni takes us to be the next figure head for the military as a symbol of humanities triumph in fighting together for a cause. Made into the next generation of master chief a propoganda tool.
Resented by real spartans we set out and attempt to prove ourselves worhty of a heros legacy.
New AI partner, perhaps roland or a neural map of johson or a new cortana or entirely new character.
Return to a narrative structure of being hiven a gun told where to point it and write a new legend.
