There are quite a few of us that use these forums regularly. Either daily or even weekly, but a lot of us have been around for years. I know I see a lot of the same friendly Gamertags when I’m on here, and I’m even lucky enough to match up with you guys in matchmaking sometimes. This is by far my favorite place to discuss Halo on the internet, as other websites have too much “noise” and distraction, whereas this is a space for dedicated conversation.
With today’s Waypoint vNext FAQ, I couldn’t help but notice the lack of a mention about the forums, sans the shutting down of the Spartan Company forums.
Back in June, 343i gave the heads up that the Waypoint forums were transitioning to Discourse. There was discussion at the time which included speculation that this would only result in changes to the backend, as the forums have gone through many backend changes in the past.
Since then I haven’t seen any discussion about the future of the forums. The lack of a link to the forums on Waypoint vNext, and no mention in today’s post worries me. Additionally, in Waypoint vNext, we are losing the ability to customize our Waypoint profiles except for displayed Service Awards.
Perhaps this is only the result of a work-in-progress build of the app/website, but I am getting the feeling the forums are going away for good in November, and that there might not even be a move to Discourse since we haven’t heard anything else since June.
Disappointed to hear that Spartan Companies are getting axed. They would have been a perfect feature to promote community in Infinite, a huge missed opportunity. I agree, the future of the forums leaves me apprehensive, we’ve only seen a preview of service records.
So that means we are not going to see Spartan Companies and Forums in the Halo Waypoint website anymore especially where things are currently going forward? Or will 343 Industries still keep them in the Halo Waypoint website?
I’m worried too that I haven’t seen any mention of them. I really enjoy my time around here browsing, reading and helping out, and I’d hate for them to be abandoned altogether. I have been advocating for a Waypoint app that includes the forums for such a long time and I was so excited when they first announced it earlier this year as it would be so much better than navigating a website every time you want to browse.

Hopefully we do see some sort of retention of the current forum system, with some updated features of course such as swiping for the next thread and push notifications to replies and likes etc.
I know what you mean. Waypoint and Bungie.net before it were great places to interact with the community. Hopefully we can get some mod confirmation soon, because it would really stink to lose these forums.
EDIT: I got curious after this and found a thread back in June discussing this, which I noticed you were a part of, and it seems like the consensus was that it was just a new platform and that the “forum history” would remain intact. In fact, it was a mod who said it. Did something happen between then and now that I’ve missed that has you worried again, or is just a case of there still not being enough clarity?

I took their response to be more of a hopeful assumption, but not a guarantee it was just backend and nothing was really changing.
Nothing has happened that I know of, but the lack of any communication since June makes paranoid I suppose, haha.

Upon reading the article it seems to specify ALL features that will be removed in the change and does not list the forums. Presumably meaning they will stay.

Yes and I think it is the same as the gearbox forums.
Glad you made this post!
I’ve only used the forums for just over a year (june last year) but I agree it’s a great place to talk Halo. Different sections for different types of topics, Monitors who help make the experience good, and like you said less noise.
Only reason I stumbled in here in the first place was because an achievement was broken on MCC, then I just kinda got stuck.
And the familiar “faces” are usually very enjoyable to come by.
I was very confused with the new app not having a forum section. That was one of the big reasons people have been begging for an app for what seems like years.
As the H5 era is over I understand that the Spartan companies are going. But it would be cool if they made some kind of “forum companies” thing, where we could create our little groups for whatever we wanted, book-clubs, achievement hunting, gaming clans, etc etc.

Same here. I am hoping that 343 Industries will find a way to keep the forums in the Halo Waypoint website. Like you say, the forums in the Halo Waypoint website is a really good place to talk about the Halo video games.
Hopefully 343 Industries will give us some updates in the next couple of days.

From what I have been told, they are going to be permanent. For now at least.
I received a message form a guy from the Company 117 ways to die. Supposedly works with 343
Discourse is a system used to implement forum on third party sites (such as waypoint). If they are using Discourse (like they said they will) that means that Halo Waypoint vNext will definitely have a forum.
Discourse is not an independent platform separate from the site it is on. This means you don’t need to sign up for a new “Discourse Account” to use the vNext forums. Gearbox and Facepunch Studios both use discourse if you want an idea of what the vNext forums will look like.
In other words, the forums are not going anywhere.
Edit: Although I’ll add that it is unclear whether the current version of the forums will be wiped and if there will be app functionality on vNext Forums.

that’s annoying. In programming you shouldn’t be putting something that isn’t complete into a live state. Even as I do stuff at work I must make sure most everything is operational for it to be ready for users.
perhaps if you wanted to keep a space for discussion you can invest in starting a website for that purpose. Making a website is not as hard as it used to. there are many services that will even give you a GUI to build the site with for those who are not programmers or website designers. If they really are axing the boards then fans keeping it alive somewhere else might be your only choice. wouldn’t be the same but it would provide a place to go.
Am I the only one who thinks they would be absolutely crazy to take the official forum down, or am I misunderstanding something? No way would they ever just take down and erase something some people have been contributing to for years, and if they do, they are insane. This whole concept boggles my mind, what am I missing? I think some speculation by users here got way out of control.
