I’ve been watching competitive Halo for a very very long time. Unlike most I didn’t start with Halo 3, I started with Reach (Columbus) didn’t bother watching Halo 4 for very long, did watch most of Halo 5 and I’ve seen all of Infinite on a competitive level.
Infinite is a very successful game competitively, its only been a few months but a few things stand out to me.
Its been a joy to watch top level teams duke it out, but there are a few things that I do not like about how things are structured/set up.
Rebroadcasts need to have a set time. It is less interesting to watch previous tournaments/series because the timelapse will tell you who wins/losses when it comes to Grand Finals. HCS should do what CSGO does and just make the rebroadcast the same length each week, if a team gets 3-0’d in Grand Finals just put black screen in afterwards to make it less predictable.
Seasons need to use different starting weapons. BR is fun yes, but I think it would be far more interesting if every season (so every year basically, probably right after Worlds) used a different starting weapon to keep the meta fresh and it would be fun/exciting to watch because it could lead to more upsets. So right now its BR starts but next season it could be DMR starts, or Magnum starts, or Commando starts, etc.
Is a good idea. I’ve felt the same way when watching vod.
The pros would hate it but I’ll admit when I first started watching Halo compeitive again with the H5 X games after not watching Reach or H4, I thought it was interesting seeing AR/ pistol starts with Fuel Rods and stuff
Yeah the black screen/rebroadcast is a must, especially for us EU players. Usually the tournaments start late and grand finals take place between 1-3am in the UK. I always watch the remainder of the cast the following day and the finals are spoiled by obvious video length. Very hard to avoid seeing it either.
In terms of weapons I do disagree, however I think unlike Halo 3 and Reach it is absolutely essential the maps and gametypes see more rotation in the tournament/league play to keep it fresh.
I got the idea from Lucid (Halo pro, maybe you’ve heard of him?) so I’m sort of championing his idea. If it were changed every few months it would be disastrous because it would almost impossible for top level players to catch up with meta and strats and such. If it changed once a year (every year, for that matter) it would give everyone plenty of time to adapt and would be freaking awesome viewership wise because it would interesting watching each season.
I think they already have 4 great maps (Aquarius, Streets, Recharge, Live Fire) and 1 subpar map (Bazaar) then you got the two ugly ducklings that are unplayable for HCS (LaunchSite, Behemoth) so the map pool is pretty slim but I think this is an obvious flaw that will be fixed once Forge and new maps/gametypes come out.
I didn’t mention it because its an issue that I’m certain they’ll address with time. The two suggestions I had were for stuff that is not surface level.
Also the best tournament wasn’t even Raleigh in my opinion, the best tournament was the first week (before Raleigh) of the NA Pro Series. Extremely close matches, went to a bracket reset in Grand Finals (I won’t spoil who won lol)
Edit: Also, they are doing pro interviews now, which are fun. Easily the best change they’ve made in a short period of time.
Everything now in NA just feels like who’s #2 lol, even though I think the top 4 is set in stone (Optic, Cloud9, Sentinels, Faze) the overall takeaway is that C9 has had an iron grip on NA and its hard to imagine too many upsets until we get settings/tuning changes.
Edit: EU is far more enjoyable in my opinion. Even though Acend are clearly the #1 team, it still feels like they’re underdogs in terms of internationally.
I think they’re good, but the problem with them is that their individual skill is lower than a lot of other teams. I think Ryanoob and Spartan are clearly the two best players on that roster, aside from them they’re pretty tame. They can place top 4, but if we’re being honest here I think their best is not as high as other teams best.
They are closest to KCP, they can place high, they can upset other teams, but consistently I don’t believe they have the firepower to consistently win.
