Did you know that the hardlight shield can deflect rockets? Not so useless after all… 
In practical Application, the Hardlight Shield is actually pretty good. It can deflect marksman and assault weapon based projectiles as well as deflect Fuel Rod Cannon, Incineration Cannon, and Sniper Weapons fire. I had a friend who used to play when Halo 4 was the big game that utilized the Hardlight Shield pretty amazingly and actually managed to get one of the most amazing kills I ever seen in Halo 4 with it.
On a BTB battle on Meltdown, an enemy fired an incineration cannon at my friend and he put up his hardlight shield. Normally in doing so, the projectile would have been thrown in a random direction as the Hardlight Shield normally deflect it as such. In this one instance, it threw the shot back at the enemy and killed him, giving my friend credit for the kill.
The Hardlight shield is also effective in Lightning Flag, as all shots are one shot kill, so if you can deflect a shot back at your opponent with it, they can kill themselves instead of you.
