So I’ve been thinking about a playlist that I think would be cool to have in Halo 5 and future Halo games. I call it the “Fundamentalist” playlist and it works like this:
Classic movement (no sprint, thrusters, slide, clamber etc.) - Maps made specifically for the classic movement style, and which can only be played in this playlist (for obvious reasons)
No Smart Scope, just classic zoom on the weapons that have always had it
Now I know what you’re thinking: “this sounds an awful lot like the classic playlist that everyone keeps asking for”. Yes, it’s pretty much the same thing, but I think it should be canonized instead of just tacked on to satisfy purists. I think it should be a section of the War Games training simulator that teaches Spartans not to become overly dependent on their tech, but instead have a good grasp of the fundamentals (hence the title) before adding things like Spartan Abilities. The playlist could be 5v5 with a mix of Slayer and Objective gametypes, or even have two separate playlists (e.g. Fundamentalist Slayer & Fundamentalist Objective).
What would you guys think about a canon playlist designed to teach Spartans to trust their own abilities before trusting things like Spartan Abilities? I think it would be a great way to incorporate some classic gameplay without it feeling anachronistic (out of place).
In the beta blog post, 343i mentioned, that they’ll make these things u’re asking for in custom games…which will eventually probably lead to an official playlist.
Do I need a canonical excuse for this? No, it’s how it all started and if they decide to make an online '‘classic’ playlist then we have already the reason for it.
That honestly sounds like a great idea. Good job on trying to canonize a reason for the playlist in War Games. However, I feel that the maps would have to be Forge based.

I know there’s going to be a toggle for customs, but I do think that the classic gameplay deserves a place in matchmaking (your apparent confidence in the eventuality that a classic playlist will be added to matchmaking is not exactly reassuring for me). I really love how Halo 5 plays with all the Spartan Abilities, but I also think the classic gameplay still has a place in matchmaking, as long as that place is clearly separated from the rest.
The canonical reasoning would be beneficial for people like me, who are more concerned with the story and how all the aspects of the game with each other, who think that a random classic playlist would seem out of place amongst the rest. You can’t go wrong by adding a canonical “excuse” for the classic playlist.

Thanks for the support!
I’m not sure why the maps would have to be forge-based though. I figure they could scrounge up some remakes and some originals to have a healthy amount of maps to choose from. That’s not to say that forge maps wouldn’t be a welcomed addition to the other maps, I think a mix would be awesome.

I’m all for the new Spartan abilities, but I think you’ve got a great idea here for those who prefer a classic experience. I love the idea of Spartans not only training with the abilities their armour gives them, but also learning how to fight without them. Let’s hope something like this happens when the game releases.

Oh for sure. There’s definitely something better out there, it was just the first thing that came to mind.

Thanks. I do think it would help make the game appeal to everyone, and it would even make sense!
I don’t think we’ll be able to disable the Smart Scope in Halo 5.
They told that we can disable Sprint, Thrusters, all of that in Custom Games, but I don’t think that it’s possible with Smart Scope.

The only weapon that would really cause an issue with disabling Smart Scope would the new Battle Rifle, since it doesn’t actually have a regular scope anymore. What they would have to do is create an alternate model of the Battle Rifle that has a classic scope, which would take the place of the new scope-less one in gametypes that have Smart Scope disabled. This wouldn’t be too hard to do.

So are these traditional maps going to materialize onto my hard drive, or what?
Or perhaps I have to play bland forge maps to get my long desired, classic Halo.
If they implement this idea as a game type, it will seldom win the vote. Competitives will leave the game.
If they make it a play list of its own and launch the playlist on any day other than launch day then it will be too late. It would suffer the same fate as legendary game types in Halo 4. By the time they got around to implementation, the competitives were all long gone.
If they make it a play list of its own and launch it on day one and leave it to forge maps only then it is still DOA.
If they make it, launch on day one, include playlist-specific maps, then best case scenario is that you further divide an already deeply fractured population. Carried to its logical conclusion, you’ll end up with 457 different playlists, each with a population of about 5 guys. They’ve all got the game customized exactly the way they want it and not enough people to play with.
There is an intrinsic appeal to the idea of “something for everyone,” but I’m just not sure how you can execute the idea without creating more problems than you solve.
Honestly we need a second beta that’s centered around BTB and a classic playlist to test it out. If they implement classic setting it cannot be restricted to customs only. I like the new setting as much if not more than classic but i understand their are people that want classic and sometimes I do to. if they make it a playlist they need to increase movement speed and jump height so ledge jumps can be made, or add property zones. This way it won’t be forge maps only.
If slayer pro is in, it should be classic settings without a radar.

Not everyone wants Halo 3 every year.
It’s a compromise. If you aren’t willing to compromise, then you’re going to be left in the dust.

Who said anything about all forge maps? I was talking about maps designed specifically for this playlist, with maybe a few forge maps thrown in (after someone else had introduced the idea of using forge maps).

I don’t see how it would divide the player base as extremely as what you’re proposing here. It would be one extra playlist, two tops. And they would be available at launch just like the others. Some people would never leave the fundamentalist playlist, and some people would venture into it. I think it’s safe to say that a good amount of people would search in both “standard” playlists and the “fundamentalist” playlist, I know I would.
