Sounds a little complicated, I’m not sure I even understand it fully. IF we ever were to get custom coatings, I envision them working something like this.

You can choose 3 colors, just like we could back in Halo 3. A primary color that covers most of the armor, a secondary that covers a little less, and a tertiary that covers smaller details. If 343 would like to really try and rectify things, they could go further and add an all-new fourth color slot.

How exactly these colors are distributed across the armor is decided by which color layout you pick. Color layouts change what parts of the armor are painted with which color. One color layout may have shoulders painted entirely in the secondary color like in Halo 3, another layout may color the lower arms and legs in the secondary color like it was in Halo Reach.

This all works similarly to how emblems work now, first you choose a base, the color layout, and then you choose the colors. The difference here is that while with emblems you choose one color (set), you now choose multiple distinct colors.

We wouldn’t even need too many colors to choose from, or a huge collection of different color layouts. I’m sure even just a few would drastically increase player expression, and allow for much more unique looking Spartans.

Unfortunately, they’ll probably never sell a custom coating because they want to sell you 100 different premade coatings that are almost what you want while not being close enough to your perfect color scheme so you won’t be satisfied.

I want to reject this with every fiber in my body, but I can’t help but suspect this is really how they’re approaching this.

Either that or they get their coating designs from a group of kindergartners’ crayon endeavors.

Exactly…
Look this ones good… awe too bad there are some bright blue parts etc…
Or that’s sick… but the head is a different color for some reason

Maybe the ability to play with colors already inside an individual coating?

Remove 1 or switch a couple etc

Long term, I can see 343i letting you assemble your own “Custom coating!” by assigning the swatch-slices from coatings you own into a custom configuration. This would ultimately be similar to what Destiny 2 allows with its shader system- shaders aren’t customizable on their own, but can be applied to armor pieces individually to create unique configurations.

This feels like a seasonal addition that they’d hype up pretty big, but I’m thinking they won’t do it until they’ve had the opportunity to sell hundreds of coatings for 3-5 seasons first. On the one hand, it would build value into coatings by allowing players to pick and choose pieces from their favorite owned coatings to create custom ones. On the other, many players might become content with their custom swatches and stop buying new coatings.

Yes. There should be a

  • Helmet slot
  • Arms slot
  • Body slot
  • legs slot
To which you can apply different coatings to

Your initial post is a bit confusing but I think I get the just of it all. Though I would love to see a more player-friendly way to customize. AKA free. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect 343i to implement a new system as they have already come out and said how notoriously difficult their engine is to work with. The ability to track if your wearing the color while completing challenges alone would be an undertaking. Take Destiny for example the nightfall weekly often has you equipping specific super types when playing nightfalls to progress but doesn’t actually track if you had it on the whole time rather the system does a check on the end state of the match. I honestly don’t see a way 343i can implement a more accessible system for customization without scrapping and starting over but at that point, they might as well put a color pack on the store that has all coatings available for free. Now this will never happen as they still need to monetize the game and are looking to monetize MCC to pick up the slack. So perhaps adding an additional coating alongside the current weekly reward. I.E 1 coating + 1 armor piece would be a small step to bridging this divide the players feel they have between the customization available and the customization they own.
