Can we just take a moment to appreciate just how terrifying it would be for covenant soldiers to find themselves in combat with SII’s during the war?
I mean seriously. It is no wonder they would call them demons as most of their knowledge of SII’s would be from rare footage filming them during combat or from the even more rare survivors of their onslaught. You would realize you’re under attack from a small handful of directions because soldiers would just drop dead in front of you from coordinated gunfire as your forward scouts and sentries almost certainly were already dead.
You would see the faceless SII’s moving and aiming with robotic precision, but mostly it would be so damn creepy how quiet they would be. You wouldn’t be able to hear their com chatter of course, to you it is just these massive figures communicating instantly and the only sound from them would be their gunfire.
Your remaining unit returns fire and these large, bulky hunks of metal would continue moving from cover to cover as the majority of your shots seem to just barely miss them as they deftly duck and sidestep the plasma bolts killing soldiers around you every few moments. Occasionally a shot will score a hit and evaporate in gold flare while the SII appears completely unphased from being shot.
Jackals duck behind shields just to find a grenade at their feet and their bodies fly past you. Your grunts attempt to throw their own grenades but the SII would be reacting and moving before the grenade even left their hand.
Worst of all would be by this point the covies would know what they are facing and that the likelihood of surviving this short encounter is next to none.
No wonder they’d call them demons.
I don’t think it’s any scarier than a bunch of civilians seeing towering alien lizard monsters slaughter their friends and family. Or a giant space laser firing down and razing the ground beneath. Remember the fear in those colonists voices on Reach when just before those two Zealots jumped Noble Team?
Also, the only Covies who showed fear were the Grunts. The Elites, being a warrior race, used the term “demon” as an insult, not out of fear, but with a modicum of respect. They recognized Spartans as worthy foes standing in the way of their sacred cause.
This fear is exhibited by the description for this picture.
Monn I’zar knew the stories of the Demon were all lies. Metal men who could cut through entire battalions of the Covenant’s finest? Nonsense!
However, face to face with that creature of legend, in that final moment, Monn was a believer.
Its not like that the covenant is less terryfing.

Modicum of respect,I see what you did there arbiter
I didn’t see spartans ever eating covies and destroying their planets. The Covenant picked a fight and reaped the consequences.
I would love a game like this!!!
