From a Fan to 343: verbal abuse due to high rank

Dear 343,

I was wondering whether or not you could implement some way of reporting other players who verbally assault you whether in Halo Reach or in future titles. I know this is Xbox Live and there are many rowdy players out there who will just troll and trash talk but there is a limit to the constant “you’re a Yoink!, you have no life that’s why you’re a Lt Col Grade 3” I can absorb while playing Matchmaking.
Ive been with the series since the original Combat Evoled and have bought every Halo book and comic released. When Halo Reach came out I played it for hours on end and because of that I achieved a high rank before most people had even touched every feature of the game. As you might expect I was very proud of my high rank and the fact I reached it very early, the only problem is other players were not as happy to see a Lt Col Grade 3 so early on. It got to the point that I couldn’t enter a matchmaking lobby without someone telling me that I didn’t have a life. Even teammates would send me messages telling me to find something else to do and/or other disrespectful phrases and words.
It came to the point where I could no longer communicate with other players or just enjoy some Team Slayer. I know some people may be thinking that “it happens to everyone there is nothing you can do” or “just ignore them” but try imagining having 2 players in about every lobby you enter calling you a “Yoink! no-life” and having to receive a message everyday regarding your rank.

Obviously these people acted immaturely which is mot uncommon among online gaming but I eventually quit playing Reach for months until just about everyone had reached my rank. I would say these players ruined the Reach experience for me for some time. Xbox Live report options have proven themselves to be pretty unreliable (no disrespect to Microsoft intended).

All I ask is for a report option dealing directly with this issue. Penalize them how you want but I would just like to know that their constant bombardments of harsh words only got them on a list of auto-mutes or however they are punished. I understand trash talking is part of playing online but it can go too far.

Thank you whoever reads this, hopefully next time I play a new Halo game I can enjoy my high rank and play in public matches. For the most part I do not play in a party only increasing the chances of being degraded.

To my fellow forum members, I would like to hear what you think about this. Whether you think they should be penalized or maybe you think it’s just part of playing online? Whatever it is feel free to discuss!
Looking forward to reach max level in Halo 4!

Here is a great place to put this as well.

Xbox live has a way you can report people you know? Also you can go into the players GT porfile and avoid them. Also you can mute them to.

Umm… Lt. Col Gr. 3 isn’t that high compared to some ranks, I’m a friggin’ hero and I don’t see that much verbal abuse.

I meant that I reacked Lt Col Grade 3 early on in Reach’s lifespan. No its not high now but in November that was the highest rank you could reach.

That was like 6 months ago dude.

Well the question is what rank are you now?

yep, and my hopes is 343 sees a thread like this and implements a report option in Halo 4. It truly ruined my experience, I would be well on my way to Inheritor if there was a report option

woops, double post

Lol, a few weeks ago I was an Eclipse and a bunch of Americans against me in the pre-game lobby said that because I was an eclipse, I must love ‘Twilight.’ Now I’ve never seen it, ( I think it’s a film?) but I’ve heard from many people that it’s really, really bad. So, because I happened to be an Eclipse at that time, I got ripped for liking a film.

yeah. Im guessing you’re not from America but liking Twilight or listening to Justin Bieber is just as bad as treason

Kind of, if you could leave Bieber stranded on an island with no contact and not have to face any consequences how many of you would do it?

Yeah, I’m from the UK - I would run 10,000 miles just to punch Justin Beaver, don’t worry. But I’ve pretty much learned to ignore the trash talk. I either get flamed at for not using my mic to call out enemies or if I do talk then I get ripped for “being British.”

I guess having a report feature for Halo 4 would be a good idea, but 343i will have to factor in the extra staff who would have to read/listen to all these reports and deal with them accordingly.

That and Xbox live already has a report feature…and an avoid feature.

Yes but knowing 343 has implemented an easy-to-use report button should help discourage people from getting too out of hand. I also find XBL report options are basically useless.

It would require alot of man power to run it.

I don’t approve of Justin Beiber, however, as a 20 year old college sophomore, I have read the Twilight series and enjoyed them.

Flame away!

However, I’m nearly a Mythic, which is a respectably high rank, but I don’t come across that much verbal abuse. However, when I do I just ignore it, or when people say I’m a “no life”, I respond with “No, I have a life. It just involves a lot of Halo!”

You can’t stop trash talkers. You can report or avoid them, but you can’t rid the world. It’s an unfortunate side effect of having a global linked network for gaming.

Audio settings to ‘Team and Party’. I did that when reaching LT. Colonel Grade 3 was a big thing back in the day. Haven’t looked back since the change. It’s nice not having to hear the other team.

Also…

I have run into few jerks in chat on reach but by far the worse verbal assualts, for me come from Halo Wars “teammates” thats one angry bunch of…
