I’ve noticed for the past couple of days that the game runs without my disc. Is there a free play week or something going on?

Yes it would seem this way.
I haven’t seen any official post about it but I can see that LukeTheNotable is having a lovely stream now with the title Halo is free, come play with us or something similar.

So, yes for now it’s free to play.

Seems odd, I’ll check it out for myself next time I get on. And I think it might have something to do with HCS

Yeah, it is free to play thru the weekend and it is because of HCS. Hopefully, matchmaking will be faster over the weekend.
