F2P will help with both match making diversity/times on the casual side of things, as well as help with growing interest in the esports sides of things (as most successful esports are either f2p are have a low price tag).
Now yeah, having a store in your face and the potential of pressuring people with fomo (fear of missing out) with limited time things can definitely make the game feel less classic and pure. But monetization will help support ongoing development of the game without the player base splitting effects of the old style of shooter post-launch support that was DLC packs, and at least they said no real-money loot boxes in the most recent post so that at least means it will be more fairly monetized than the full priced game that is Halo 5.
For those who have been with this franchise for a while now will know Halo has been struggling to maintain a consistent multiplayer population since Reach, those who disliked the changes in Reach went back to Halo 3, those who disliked Halo 4’s multiplayer went to Reach, and those who disliked Halo 5 went to the MCC, if not to another franchise all together.
The multiplayer going F2P might solve the population woe by enticing those who wish to try out the game (and hopefully sticking around) without having to monetarily invest in a franchise they might not know/care about.
So long as they don’t add pay to win mechanics, I’m down for the multiplayer being F2P.
