Fred is blue team leader.

How is this dynamic going to work. Fred is an officer while chief is a NCO. Yet all the Spartans look to chief as their defacto leader. In the new campaign video of blue team it was pretty apparent that Fred was calling the shots.

In the books, they simply took John as their leader before any rank was stablished (from the moment they played CTF as children) until the Fall of Reach, with Chief on the station unable to contact the Spartans on the surface, Fred becoming the de facto new leader of the recently formed Red Team and after that, the leader of the new Blue Team that resurfaced.

With Chief back, I do think they are logically consider him the leading force of the team even if unofficially. He’s the most experienced one when it comes to Forerunner enemies, or at least I get that impression. Didn’t finish reading Glasslands because… it… it just felt so sloppy for my taste.

Fred is technically in charge, but he defers to Chief in the heat of battle quite a bit is how I understand it. He takes care of the general strategy, Chief does the tactics.

Fred hands over command to Chief and no one really thinks anything of it.

Fred is a higher rank, but Chief is more often looked at as the leader due to respect and tradition.
We’ll probably see Chief and Fred, and really all of Blue Team, share their tactical advice and analysis. They all know their roles, and they’ll work together effectively.

It’s only gameplay mechanics, he is like Cortana…telling you not to go to the wrong place, do that, etc

As others have said John is their leader. While Fred Is a LT Junior grade they still see John as their leader. In the books John though that Fred could have being beat him/ do better while in training but he didn’t want the attention. Also he probably didn’t want to become a LT but he was given the position by Kurt.

Fred is technically the leader, but Chief led them before for years. Fred allows Chief to take command.

Fred is the producer, Chief is the director.

I don’t think Fred is so much “calling the shots” in that clip as his is just giving the Chief information about what to do next - a-la what Cortana usually did in past games. I think we’ll see the Chief pretty much in charge of Blue Team for the entire game.

Apparently the rank of master chief petty officer of the navy outranks lieutenants, even if the latter are officers. In The Fall of Reach, there’s a section where there are two junior lieutenants and the master chief (not S-117, just another guy) calls the shots, they even address him as ‘Sir’.

Also, according to Wikipedia, the rank of MCPON, “this billet is protocol equivalent to a vice admiral”.

MASTERCHEIF is and should be the blue team leader.

Ok to clear everything up, from the DOSSIER from the Legendary edition of the game Fred and nearly every higher ranking officer than Master Chief defects to Chief due to his combat experience and Chiefs natural leading abilities.

To be fair, Chief would probably be way higher in rank right now if it wasn’t for the fact that his name is basically Master Chief.

General Chief just doesn’t have the same ring you know Admiral Chief!! Admiral General Master Chief!!

Also I thought in one of the books they say that chiefs rank is the highest amongst the spartan chain. Even if Fred was a higher rank with the Navy when it comes to the Spartans anyone with the title of Master Chief Petty Officer was seen as the leader of the Spartans. And there was several times when Spartans refered to others as “Sir”. In cases when a different team was leading the current mission regardless of the ranks that team had the authority.
