My big thing with Halo has been playing it with roommates, like I have more friends that come over to play than I do online. For some reason, though, playing on any map larger than Haven or Adrift causes some pretty immense drop in frame rate if my friends and I are out in the open or scoped, looking across a solid portion of the map (most Big Team maps are atrocious for this). I won’t say it makes the game unplayable or anything, but it is frustrating that we have to fight more with the sluggish frame rate that sporadically drops during that vital 5th shot than we do with the enemy team.
I don’t even really want to get into how bad the frame rate gets if one of us gets into a Ghost on Complex, then it really does become unplayable for both of us as there’s almost a .25 second lag on everything we see!
Please let me know if there’s a way to fix this. I installed both discs, so I don’t think it’s a loading problem. I tried posting this in the “Issues” thread but I didn’t see a “Post Reply” button, so I’m posting it here.
343, can You fix it ?
Okay, game looks fantastic, but in split-screen mode, Halo4 should have textures in lower resolution, or smaller effects… like explosions.
splitscreen in halo have always been one of the most ‘exclusive’ xbox-live feature.
You shouldn’t change this…
Unfortunately there’s not much to be done about it. 343 wanted to make the game look good, and they did, but it comes at the expense of performance. The Xbox 360 is a piece of -Yoink- with 7-8 year old hardware in it. Your typical low-end laptop released these days has more power than the 360, especially if you’re talking about available graphics memory.

you mean your 5 month old 300$ phone is more powerful than a 7 years old console? no wai!
Bungie reduced textures and LoD rendering among other things when playing on split screen. There was no noticeable frame-rate difference on split-screen compared to normal, and Reach was on the same exact engine that h4 is on (because they copy-pasted it). So it all comes down to laziness on the developers part in this case. It doubt it will (or can) be fixed.
343i knows about frame rate issues. Just compare Complex from War Games with it’s Spartan Ops counterpart - it seems they tweaked the map for SO. Smooth frame rate on some maps can be done with cost of more aggresive distance draw, which is really small price.
However harm has been done (Shatter, just like most Forge maps, in unplayable on splitscreen), and probably only way to fix it would be to switch some maps with their more tweaked versions. Sounds like 2-3gb patch. I don’t know if 343i decides to do this, but for sure they should. Split screen’s too important for this franchise - after 5 years most people who still plays Halo 3, play it on split screen!
this is the problem for the people wanting to get maps into MM, the main thing they ask for is that frame rate is fine in split screen, its so difficult to do this, luckily ive tweaked it enough to make it work with 3 way split screen but it is difficult, when the 720 is out then itll be fine, remember the xbox is like 6 years old now, so its getting on and yet still playing games with graphics this good!! theres not alot you can do bout it im afraid
Sure there are frame rate issues on many bigger maps, always complex and 99.9% of forge maps.
But even that aside I hate the resolution of split screen. I haven’t quite figured it out, but I play just awful on split screen in H4 and that’s all I ever wanted to play in H3 and Reach because I actually played better believe it or not.
I almost hate when my buddy wants to stop in and game because I can;t play BF3 split screen and H4 is just garbage if I try
So, is this issue still prevalent for many? I’ve still been unable, since the latest map pack, to play Big Team splitscreen with either my wife or my friends, and we still have to avoid Complex like the plague when playing little slayer.

I usually play with gf. Complex is just bad, and Shatter or Forge maps are even worse. 343i should feel ashamed for not fixing it, and I just hope incoming map pack will be as smooth as last one despite being BTB.
Interesting thing - we lately played BTB on Halo 3 by splitscreen, and frame drops were clearly worse than in Halo 4. I actually don’t remember it being that choppy, it’s like Halo 4 accustomed us for smooth gameplay, so when it gets hiccup, it hurts.
