I’m not talking about this progression system akin to Reach’s. I’m talking about this new replacement for 1-50 and Arena. I am not suggesting a system, just what this new ranking system needs if 343 wants it to succeed.
Instant gratification: This the big difference between 1-50 and Arena. 1-50 provided this instant gratification. As soon as a match was over, you would instantly see if you went up or down or no change. Arena does not, you have to wait 4 days just to see where you place and than wait another day just so you can see your placement update. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like waiting like this so I would stop playing it, and if I don’t play I just go down in division placement. Arena demands to much commitment and is simply too time consuming just to see how you match against the rest of the Arena community.
Easy visibility: This is another thing 1-50 had over Arena, in Halo 2 or 3, you can easily see what rank someone was either instantly in a ranked lobby, or by selecting them and seeing their ingame service record. You might not think this, but this provides a large amount of incentive to play a ranked playlist. People want to show where they place among others or how good they are. Up-to-date Arena divisions are hidden under 100000 pages under a players ingame service record, hardly anyone will ever see it. If no one is ever going to see it, why bother playing Arena? This new ranking system in Halo 4 needs to have it’s ranks or whatever not hidden under a pile of stats.
Win/Loss: A ranking system should always be based either completely or almost completely off who you win and lose too. If anyone remembers, Pre W/L Arena was a train wreck, a game nothing more than FFA with players sharing points to a win. Systems based off kills, deaths and assists like Arena Rating, brings out the bad side of players and creates selfishness and lone wolf playstyles, this goes against every Halo is known for. Team play.
Variety: Slayer. Slayer. Slayer. Slayer. That is all Arena is. Yet again, 1-50 surpasses Arena in this category. H3 had a large selection of playlists. Slayer, Objective, Snipers, MLG, etc etc. Even a few Double Exp playlists had 1-50. Playing only one single gametype is tedious and eventually becomes dull. A variety playlists should always be available for a ranked system. The playlists would also have separate rank placements. Being a 50 in Doubles doesn’t mean you are a 50 in MLG. Another enticing design to make players show how good they are in various game settings. A 4v4 Slayer, 4v4 Objective, MLG, (maybe) Snipers, an FFA playlist and Doubles are all that is needed.
I agree with the easy visibility part. If someone is 1% onyx in arena, hardly anyone will ever notice. Not to mention that in a few seasons that no one will even know that you have ever gotten to Onyx in the first place.
Can I be honest here? I don’t much see the point in these threads. I agree with you, but it just seems, ultimately, otiose.
I’m sure 343i already has their ranking-system set in stone. They’ve probably spent months testing it to tweak it to perfection knowing ranking is important to Halo players alike. These threads have become redundant at this point. While it does spark conversation, it sparks conversation void of any meaning.

Something like a ranking system isn’t that grounded, while the base of it is probably set in stone, I am not suggesting changes to the mainframe of it. Stuff in the OP can be easily done in little time.

I can’t stress how much I agree with this, which is why I’m going to bump this.
It’s like no one gives a -Yoink- about ranked play anymore, it’s all about Barbie customization. 343i are going all out with these weapon & armour skins.
I’m pretty sure that time can be well spent on other matters that determine the lifespan on Halo 4.
I agree. I think they should actually make ranks divisional like in Arena, but as you said on a larger scale with more playlists and gametypes. It should always be visible and after a match there should be a screen that says how close you are to getting promoted (or demoted) to a new division.

Arena now already does that. If you’re 5% Gold than you’re on the edge of being Onyx, for example.
Agree with OP 100%, it should be easily visible to everyone where you are… Something Reach did was show the emblem of your rank (showing you are an Eclipse, Inheritor etc. etc.), I think this should come back but as the Ranked emblem, not the credits emblem.
As long as it’s visible, a skill system that pairs up similarly skilled players/parties and doesn’t take the backburner to flashy credit based emblems, i have no problem with these suggestions.
A couple of ranked playlists would be fine as well. None of this emphasis on social and no ranked. A balance of both would work.
