I do community service solely because I enjoy helping other people and animals. I divide up where I help out at throughout the week, I don’t visit the same place too many times a month, I rather be in multiple locations. I primarily volunteer at three locations; the local animal shelter, a place called the Children’s Museum for kids to go during the day and play, and the Ronald McDonald house for kids who have had hospital visits.
The animal shelter work is based around helping the animals obviously, cleaning cages, walking the dogs, changing out their food, clipping dog or cat nails when they’ve become too long, sometimes I even get to talk to families that come in and help them find the right pet which is alot of fun.
For the Children’s Museum I get to stop in a few hours during the day and play with the kids, most are dropped off for a while by busy parents, they get to play with other kids their age as well as with the volunteers like myself. There are puppet shows with all kinds of outfits so you can make a whole story out of thin air to engage the kids and keep them calmed down, building blocks and legos to stack and create towers and cars and whatever else comes to mind that the child enjoys, they also have these curved ramp tables that you roll these balls across that feel somewhat like a hotwheel on a track haha, pretty neat. The kids get so excited whenever you put enough enthusiasm into any of it though, good to see kids so happy because I didn’t get to enjoy things the way they get to when I was younger.
Lastly is the Ronald McDonald house, this place is a big center next to the hospital for children who are going to have operations or already have, they are brought there to take their minds off the issues and just take it easy and enjoy themselves and recover. My jobs range from sweeping floors and washing them to keep it safe so kids aren’t inhaling dirt and dust or slipping on wet surfaces, or I make the food that is served to them for lunch time, soup, sandwiches, veggies, primarily easy to eat foods that support healthier eating alternatives, and I also do story time where you get the kids together and let them vote for which book they’d like to have read to them, you vote to promote them all working together and using fair ways to make decisions and learn to get along. Its such a great place, some of the kids are burn victims or had to have surgery from car accidents or abuse, but its such an accepting place that none of the kids are judged, none of them make fun of others or laugh at children with unfortunate deformities, they’ve all learned to be accepting and get along, its so wonderful to see because I didn’t grow up with that same kind of acceptance and tolerance. Really gives those kids hope for better days.
Anyway, I believe I’ve said enough about myself. I’ve made my case, best of luck to everyone and congratulations to the winner
