'Forgiven' medal

The current problem with betrayal booting in Reach is that it is abused. Losing a player from your squad apparently isn’t incentive enough to forgive players as the game is credit driven, you also certainly cannot rely on the good conscience of the community. Instead those who get the option frequently opt to boot whoever betrayed them, even if it was an accident.

There are two solutions I can think of for resolving this problem. The first is disabling friendly fire, a decision I strongly disagree with. Betrayals have always been a hilarious part of Halo, they also prevent [most] people from mindlessly throwing grenades at their team mates as they rush.

My solution instead plays off the same mindset that allows people to boot others: primarily caring about credits and medals, rather than concerning themselves with winning the gane.

If a player has the boot option it should be made clear that in forgiving a player they will get a credit bonus. The bonus would obviously not be as significant as a kill, it would also only happen once per player per match. Couple the credits with the announcement ‘Forgiven’ and ensure the message is clear and on a buffer page (lengthening the time it takes to boot someone, perhaps with a 3-5 second countdown, so that they are less impulsive) and I am confident people will think twice about kicking the person.

Just remove friendly fire. No one is gonna waste grenades throwing them at their teammates. Actually no I like to betray people sometimes

For those who troll and don’t care about Spartan Points/Credits; i hardly see this as a deterrent Tom.

Then again, i search with friends who don’t betray, so this isn’t so much as an issue with me.

Unique idea with the Forgiven concept though. Maybe someone who gets betrayed often will have a different view on this idea.

I have so many great memories of accidentally sniping a friend in the back of the head, don’t take that away from me!

I edited my post

The other thing worth considering in the OP, which I admittedly just tacted on, is the idea of adding a buffer. Currently a player can boot in half a second, if this were delayed with a timer of 5 seconds or so it might stir a person’s conscience and prevent their impulsive drives. There is no perfect solution when confronted with the internet -Yoink- but I still believe it is possible to reduce the frequency of the practice with some level of positive reinforcement and by giving people opportunity to reflect - and hear the ‘sorry man, that was an accident’ from the person that just killed them.

Opening post is a good idea. It would not stop harsh booting altogether but it would certainly make some players think twice. And it certainly won’t do any harm.

I disagree, actually no I agree.

What good will a credit bonus do in a system that means absolutely nothing?

Didn’t you see how many people went tryhard with boosting and such for Reach’s general rank? It doesn’t mean anything as well, but they still went on crazy boosting sprees.

@Tom
Removing the friendly fire is a terrible idea. First of all it lowers the skill gap. Your friend is being assassinated? LOL IMMA SHOOT A ROCKUT CUZ HE WONT DIE.
With a bit of strategy and teamwork the problem becomes even worse. Two guys are hiding with a sword and a shotgun behind that wall? Stick your teammate with a sticky and blow up the enemies while your teammate doesn’t even get hurt.

I like your new medal idea. Not sure about giving credits, though. Some people might use it to boost themselves (not that it matters in a worthless rank system that doesn’t work based on skill, but still).

It could work but it could be abused as well.

It really sucks that the people who boosted their 50’s in H3 are the
reason 1-50 isn’t returning. :frowning:

Anyway, on topic, I agree with OP. Turning friendly fire off would not work at all.
It’s a big part of Halo!

“You’re outta here!” Medal.

Requirement: Kick a player from the game.

I like it. Good idea, and I certainly don’t see this as something that would be to hard or timeconsuming to implment.

Hehehe. I’d like to see this too.

Unfortunately since joining games in progress has been confirmed, the betrayal problem is only going to get worse.

We’ll probably see boot montages on youtube come 12/01/12.

Good idea OP, but JIP is going to make betrayal booting even more common unless 343 fixes the system.

Also, if friendly fire gets turned off it will cause a lot of teams to use kamikaze tactics (stick your buddy then he sprints into the other team).

> It could work but it could be abused as well.

The only way I could see it being abused is if it rewarded a significant amount of credits and could be done more than once. If it can only be done once per player per game, as I noted in the OP, people couldn’t use this to boost, if that is what you are referring to when you say ‘abused’?

Then why would we help them by giving them a cR bonus?

Brilliant idea. Might I add that I’d probably have it as a medal that does not effect points, credits, or experience and maybe a mini-achievement for Halo Waypoint. I think this feature would almost certainly improve the vogue a little more with multiplayer.
