FORGE!

What if…

There was some sort of Forge engine in Halo Wars 2?
This would (obviously) be a brand new feature, but just imagine the cray stuff people could create!
Making full on custom games wouldn’t really work, but players could build heir own competitive maps!

What do you think?

Since there is a PC version I would fully expect some sort of map editor tool, if not at launch then shortly after. Since the obvious competition on PC is the Starcraft crowd it would be foolish for them not to include such a feature. Map editor functions tend to add a great deal of longevity to RTS games.

Sounds good. Building Terrain might be hard. Perhaps there would be enormous forge canvases like alpine in halo 5 instead? Also, would the editor be in first person or top down?

I hadn’t thought of it, but now that you mention it, that is actually very possible, if not, dare-I-say, probable.

It would almost certainly be top down. Map editors for RTS have been around forever, so it would almost be surprising for HW2 NOT to have one. It would also probably be much more in-depth, at least for PC than forge. There likely wouldn’t be canvases, you would probably be able to create your own terrain and ‘canvas’. You can look at Warcraft 3 for a really old, but extremely in depth map editor, and that came out 13 years ago.

AHEM*

No that I’m not all for some sort of Forge in Halo Wars 2…

EDIT: To save ya’ll a click

I’ve been waiting for a World Builder for Halo Wars for too long. I hope they add it in post launch (I wouldn’t count on it being there at launch).

It could be DLC…

However:
There is a season pass for HW2, which confirms paid DLC.
A forge/map editor SHOULD NOT BE PAID. It should be available to everyone!
It just wouldn’t make sense for it to be paid.

DLC is a cancer. At this point from the information surrounding the business descisions (season pass DLC) I doubt very much that I will purchase Halo Wars 2 at launch. I cannot in good conscience support that business model, even for a product that I am passionate about. I will wait 6months to a year for the actual final product and resulting mods to fix developer errors.

I am saddened by this realization but until expansion packs make a return, I will not purchase any DLC model based products until they finish thier DLC cycle.

My only real hope for this game at this point is that the engine framework is solid enough for modders to fully realize the potential of a halo wars title, and that creative assembly/343 are not foolish enough to attempt to inhibit or prevent modding.

The games industry is in a sad state.

Hm… I hadn’t heard that. That is pretty disappointing

Who says custom games wouldn’t work? I’m all for such an Idea!!!

What is the situation of the “season pass”? do you seriously have to pay extra from just live to play the game or something??

I cannot wrap my brain around being able to build a forge map in HW2. I could see it work well on pc but a controller sounds very inconvenient. I could however see you being able to place down things but not messing around with the land

I just can’t fathom how one would build a truly custom game. Custom games are easy and can totally exist, but CUSTOM games would be challenging and kinda weird. Like how would you make race? or infection? Or something like mongoose sumo?

I mean, ofcourse you have to set limits like things that would only work in an RTS, not like race or anything like that. More like, Super scarab where there is a roaming scarab at start of match and who ever kills it first wins or something like that.

Actually now that I really think about it, you could make a ton of really cool custom games. You could probably make a race gamemode where you have to reach the finish, but there are power nodes and supplies along the way which you can capture to purchase faster and better units. My mindset is somewhat limited to FPS halo games, since those are the only ones that I have played, but there is a whole new world that I have yet to explore! February 21 can’t come soon enough!

Well, maybe? Still see other things that work in RTS way better. Don’t get me wrong I forged some of the best and most creative racetracks to date and love the mode but I think some things work in RTS and some things don’t. Just think about it in terms of global armies and contril and stratagy and what would work with that. Like race works on coordination and driving skills. Not in RTS ya’ know?

Well, it didn’t look like or sound like it.
But the modding group might be able to do something for the PC.
Only time will tell.

Have you guys honestly never played a PC RTS? Custom games were a huge deal. It’s not just an FPS thing…

Going from PC to console creates no restrictions other than the slight disadvantage of gamepad cursor precision vs Mouse precision.

You’re fine with Forging in a 3 dimensional space on console (H5), but “Forging” on a topdown-plane blows your mind? If anything that should be reversed.

Go look at any of the common RTS map creators, specifically Starcraft or Age of Empires, and with the exception of triggers/scripting, a map creator could easily work on console for an RTS.
