Halo Infinite’s Forge needs to be what Infinite’s Arena multiplayer is aiming for: focused on both the hardcore players and casual players. This is the perfect time to focus on easy entry to creative content, especially with the possibilities in Halo.
Halo 5’s Forge was the best iteration in terms of content & possibilities, but even for someone like me who spent tons of hours in Halo 3’s & Reach’s Forge mode, Halo 5’s Forge was very intimidating to use. There needs to be an option that allows new/casual players to not be intimated by the user interface of Forge like Halo 5’s was. Many creative software have a “basic” mode and a “pro” mode, where the basic mode has less in-depth features but it’s also more user friendly and easy to understand. A “pro” mode should be available for those awesome map-makers that really want to push the bounds of Forge.
Creativity is a huge deal in gaming right now; Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite Creative, to name the obvious examples. And Halo is a pioneer of promoting user content in its games, so not only is it a trend worth capitalizing on, but it’s also something true to the roots of what made Halo a standout in FPS games to the point that “Halo isn’t just a shooter” was a common praise of the franchise.
Halo 3’s groundbreaking push for user-created content with Forge (and Theater mode) is what I believe really pushed Halo into its “golden age” at the time. And with the current popularity of creative content in gaming right now, Forge can be as big for Halo’s success as Halo’s competitive scene if done right, which is to make it enticing to both your casual players (by making a mode that’s very user friendly) and hardcore forgers (by giving them a mode that’s user-friendly to an extent but also let’s them go wild with the features and behind-the-scenes functions like scripting in Halo 5’s Forge).
Halo Infinite’s competitive scene, if done right, will keep a good chunk of players. But Halo’s community as a whole will be so much more active and reach way more players outside of the Arena genre if Forge (and file sharing) is able to compete with the current popular builder games of today.
I’m really curious to learn more about Forge – I never got very far into it with H3 / H5, but am hoping to give it another shot
The only thing that kept halo 5 afloat for so long was Forge. Infinite is looking to be much better in terms of gameplay, but I agree, without forge it would likely have difficulty lasting for a decade. Good thing we know it’s coming, 100%, and is “more powerful than ever”

Back in Halo 3, I was just a dumb kid but still understood and had tons of fun with Halo 3’s Forge. As a less dumb adult, Halo 5’s Forge was just too much for me to have the patience to figure out, and that was really frustrating because I loved to forge maps on Halo 3 and Reach.
I really hope 343i acknowledges just how vital Forge was to Halo’s “golden age” that they don’t see it as an afterthought to competitive Halo like they did with Halo 5. I’d argue to say that Forge w/ custom games together has way more potential to keep the community more active (and infinitely broader player demographics outside of FPS players) than the competitive scene could do alone.

This is exactly where I was. I’d love for 343i to give some basic toolkits to people new to the system (or who could use a big refresher)

Oh yeah I know Forge is coming to Infinite, I’m just saying that 343i needs to really REALLY invest in it more than ever, especially seeing how successful creative content is in some of the biggest games out now. If there’s a trend worth following that’s also part of Halo’s roots, it’s user created content.
