I used to forge a lot but never got into H5 cuz there wasn’t split screen and so without the ability to easily throw LAN parties I wasn’t motivated. I was really excited for Forge to finally come back in Infinite cuz now it’s Free to Play and has split screen so I can easily gather friends to play again. That to say I am coming from the perspective of having a lot of experience in forge prior to H5 and none in H5. Also obviously I haven’t spent that much time in the new forge so maybe you can do these things and I just haven’t figured out how, in which case please feel free to explain them to me. That still imo points to things that could be fixed and made more clear from a UI perspective though.
The controls are obviously very different now which isn’t in and of itself a bad thing, but there are things I think have been lost from a speed and ease of use perspective that could be re-implemented.
Being able to snap your camera’s axis to the object(s) you’re holding so that you can easily rotate around them. It is nice that we now don’t have to do this anymore, but I immediately wished that I could. It would also be nice if we could move around holding objects the way we used to. The new system is great for precision and fine tuning but it really makes the process of just blocking things out and getting started feel a lot more cumbersome.
Also on that note I found I was having trouble clicking on the move arrows successfully, almost like the hitboxes weren’t quite matching what I was seeing on screen.
I see no reason why we can’t continue moving and rotating our cameras with the object menu open, at least on kbm, not sure how the controls differ with controller.
It’s great that we can preview items in the menus without having to create them and then delete them if we didn’t actually want them! However it seems to not preview whichever one you have highlighted. Also I found it very annoying that I couldn’t rotate the objects while they were previewing to get a better view of them.
At first I was flabbergasted that there were both objects spawning into the canvases by default and no DELETE EVERYTHING button. I realized that you can drag your cursor to box select which makes it pretty easy to delete everything but this was not immediately obvious to me and I’ve seen some others complaining about it too so still feels like a weird thing to lose. But why are there objects spawning on blank canvases? Seems like an unnecessary little annoyance. Obviously not game braking though.
Is there a RESET ORIENTATION button? I messed around with the scale on an object and then wanted to reset it and had to go and type in equivalent dimensions to reset it. A lot more tedious for something that used to be one click away.
Also I could’ve sworn I remembered them saying they’d added an UNDO button, but I can’t figure out how to use it or where it is.
Based on what they’ve shown off and what I’ve seen others make this new forge is obviously very powerful and there are a lot of improvements which is super exciting! But I am worried that I won’t be able to really get into it if the controls stay the way they are and the minute to minute gameplay of actually moving around feels so awkward.
