These aren’t for you to see your reflection, but to make map creation much more simple. They reflect blocks.
The item would be as thick as a Grid from Halo:Reach. You would edit it’s area of influence just as you would edit a hill’s size, or a teleporter’s teleportation area. If a block is within that area, it will be copied onto the otherside. If a block is partially in the area, it will still be copied. This is perfect for symmetrical maps. If the object lies perfectly center on the mirror, it will not be copied.
There could be another type of mirror as well, this instead rotates the blocks within it’s area 180 degrees around the center of the mirror. A map that is like this is Asylum.
These two blocks could go in the gadgets section, or their own section, called mirrors. Their names could be:
-Mirror, Reflection
-Mirror, Rotation
But I think players should be allowed to select pieces and save them as a “Creation”.
Then, they could open up that creation and use it again.
They’d be able to easily make a symmetrical map by saving the first half.
And opening it up again. And putting it on the opposite end.

Problems? May you please elaborate?
And as to your idea, would you group objects together to create a new object to be placed? But that would not be symmetrical, since you would rotate it. Besides, the mirror would work with all item types, and how could you create an object with multiple item types? I mean grouping a weapon with a block?
