As a preface to this post, and for the tl;dr crowd, I predict that Forge Mode will be entirely hosted on dedicated servers and that a new “Forge Marketplace” will be introduced.
With all multiplayer custom games being hosted on dedicated servers I am curious how the process of using forge maps will work. In previous Halo titles, a custom game played on a forge map would be hosted on a console that already had the forge map data. With custom games no longer being hosted on the console the forge data will need to be uploaded to the dedicated server in order for the game to played on the forge map.
There are a few ways that I think this could be handled:
- Forge maps are created and stored locally on your console and the forge data is uploaded to the dedicated server when the custom game is started.
- Forge maps are created locally and stored in the cloud. The dedicated server gets the forge data from the cloud.
- Forge mode is hosted entirely on dedicated servers. Forge maps are created and stored in the cloud. The dedicated server gets the forge data from the cloud.
The methods above are obviously a simplification of the process and don’t take into account subtle things that could be done such as background uploading/downloading of forge data when a forge map is selected for a custom game but prior to the game being actually started.
Having Forge Mode be hosted on dedicated servers makes a lot of sense to me for a number of reasons:
- Forge Mode is very similar to Custom Game. Because custom games are hosted on dedicated servers so should Forge Mode.
- Forge maps created on dedicated servers can be stored in the cloud automatically and made available for custom games without having to be uploaded from the console.
- Forge maps stored in the cloud can be searched and shared through a “Forge Marketplace” even when you are offline.
- A “Forge Marketplace” can be curated. Popular maps can be made very visible and individual maps or game modes can be given spotlight treatment.
- Disc space that would be taken up by forge assets can be used for other data.
There has also been speculation that Forge Mode will be shown off at Gamescom and that it will be more robust than ever before. More robust means that the data size of forge maps will increase as well. Having all forge data stored online will cut down on load times for custom games and make everyone happier.
What are your thoughts on how Forge Mode will be implemented and the potential impact of dedicated server vs offline Forge Mode?
I hope there still is local play for forge no matter what you suggest. I dont want to be online 100% of the time on my xbox, and im pretty much getting H5 for forge and campaign.

I didn’t see you say it, but by ‘Forge Marketplace’, did you mean money/microtransactions would be involved? I really hope that isn’t the case, but I do like the idea you’re suggesting.

No, I wasn’t referring to “marketplace” in the sense that money would be involved. “Forge Hub” would probably have been a better term for me to have used.
I love the ideas you presented but in my humble opinion forge is merely the next feature to be cut to improve the “gameplay fidelity” 343 likes to boast about.
Oh, they’ll say they planned to add it but had to cut it to focus on “blah, blah, blah”
Or, if they do give it it will be the light bulb only Tron style forge hub they offered as part of the Beta. Good bye any unique, style, customized maps but all-in on Arena style maps that look the same.
But that’s my two cents

Stop hijacking threads to complain about split screen. It’s already been stated by multiple 343 staff members that Forge mode in Halo 5 will be much larger in scope than any previous title.

There’s a thread for split screen already, you can go there and -Yoink- about it. Forge is nowhere near being cut, rather it is one of 343’s bigger focuses for Halo 5.
