Forge is too complicated, might repel beginners

I’m a long time Halo fan and have been playing around with Forge since the very beginning of its launch, making dozens of playable maps, whether building competitive Arena maps or race tracks for getting around in a mongoose.

What made forge really awesome was its simplicity of use, without any experience I could start building maps easily.
The Halo 5 forge has turned into a gimmicky map editor rather then a simple “if you can build legos, you can use the forge”.

While I can definitely see using all the new benefits found in Forge, I’m afraid that Forge will repel new users from starting to use forge, and might even push away current casual forgers. I really wish that forge had a “simple editing” mode similar to previous games, and all the current functions would be added bonuses which can be enabled separately.

The new forge won’t repel beginners. If a beginner wants to forge they will take the effort to figure it out. However lots of people will see that something is difficult and hate it.

I don’t think it’s complicated at all. MY issue is that the implementation is just plain bad.

No, it’ll repel beginners, especially when there are better map editors out there.

I think new players will get on just fine. It’s the people who are used to how it worked in Halo 3, Reach, Halo 4, and Halo 2 Anniversary who are most annoyed about how complicated and different it is. The new players don’t know that. They’re not having to re-learn anything, they’re just learning it for the first time, so it’s new and exciting for them. They’re not going to be all stubborn and whiny about it and probably create amazing things.

And the whole point of Halo 5’s Forge is that it’s not like playing with Legos. Forgers have been asking for a sophisticated, complex, technical map creator that gave them the most freedom and options for years. They wanted options. Options, options, options. More set pieces. More tools. Ability to select entire structures, ect. ect. ect. Not to be held back. The Forgers had a laundry list of wants and needs and 343 delivered on nearly every one of them. And you’re whining because you have to learn something new? That a new game offers a newer, different, more complex experience? One that people for years have been asking for?

And I see you threw “gimmicky” in there. How is it a gimmick? How? Give me one good reason why on Earth that word was stuck in there when talking about this forge. Or was it just out of habit when complaining about this game?

maybe a tutorial, or a beginer/novice and advanced user options would have been good.

i never touched forge in previus games its pretty overwhelming atm im sure ill get use to it.

but I think ill accept that i dont have the talent/time to make good maps so im looking forward to other users creations!

I agree. That again shows, how much Casual the Halo-Community have gotten since Halo 3. Thats why it doesn’t surprised me at all…
I don’t say this “update” is perfect. There isn’t infection, and still no Serverbrowser… but whinning is annoying…

Forge has always been complicated. I don’t think it is an issue

Yeah it will. It’s not the fun mess around environment it used to be.

Not of this complexity.

I think a tutorial explaining everything would be best

I agree to a certain extent, my biggest issue with Forge is that the controls are godawful. You want to move a simple object up a bit? Gotta press one button to select it, then hold down on a trigger this whole time, then press on A while moving around to place it. And you want to rotate an object by a bit? No problem! Too bad you only have two axis to work with, so a job that would take two seconds now takes two minutes.

The potential with this new Forge is great, but I came into it feeling like I would need to completely learn everything I knew all over again. It’s not intuitive like Forge in past Halo games, and for the time being, I’m put off from making any maps.

So If I’ve never done forge before in any other Halo games, but have been super excited about the release in Halo 5. What would you say is the learning curve? (estimate)

couple hours? days?

The more complicated it gets the better. Just means there is more to do.

go on youtube

If someone isnt willing to learn these basic controls than they definitely don’t have the power to build any map worth even humoring.

whining is feedback and can lead to progress. If it’s counter intuitive to a lot of the user base, why shouldn’t it be adjusted, especially since it’s the first iteration of this version of forge; it’s bound to have flaws that could do with some fixing

I just don’t get why they had to adjust the control scheme, OR let you change the controls scheme. A and B to go up and down?? What is that?

Ok, let’s eliminate all the new features in order to make it easier. Then let’s complain about the lack of such features. Love this community.
