Do you just draw up the layout first or what.
I plan all of mine on scraps of paper usually, 2 or 3 pieces of paper, and placed on top of one another to show each level of the map (if the map has verticality and different levels)
I 8/10 times draw out my ideas on paper first, then I go into forge and test different pieces and make up areas in block form. Lastly I block out the map as a whole. If it’s good enough or plays well enough I go into designing the map with more detailed blocks. Playtests often.
And I take it step by step.
Well one perk of my ADHD gives me a very open mind. I plan by imagining it in my head and work from there… not really helping me much with one map, I’m trying to make a building look destroyed but I just can’t get it the way I want too.

Well that’s handy! All my plans normally come from a certain theme I want to capture but they never turn out just how I want… the lighting budget is a pain

Not with me, I just get an idea and work with it until the line stops… currently it’s at that stop because I can’t think of anything else… the original idea for the map was a city with a destroyed halo 2 scarab in it… I ended up going to play ODST today for inspiration, lol.
People plan maps? Crap… I just go as I think, but it also takes longer, maybe. I’ve been working on a map since Christmas. The only thing that I plan, is the story and lore behind the map. Everything else is random.
I think of the closest map to the one I’m making, and try to remake certain parts of that map. Once I remake it I change the layout and add to it. Eventually it’s nothing like the map it’s based on.
In my head. No layout, no blueprints, nothing. Just an idea. That way when I start forging if I don’t like something or something isn’t possible to build, I can just change it as I see fit. No hassle of redoing the layout. Forge is a world of creativity after all
I make things up as I go along.
Pretty much every map I make I get about 75% of it made and then abandon it forever
I’ve taken a lot of different approaches over the years. Sometimes I have a plan on paper, sometimes a plan in my head, sometimes I just start building with no plan at all. Among my best maps are projects that started out each different way. You just never know when inspiration will strike, what form it will take, or which tools will best serve its realization.

Unless I’m doing remakes. Like right now, I’m remaking Splatter Monkey (have yet to see it in H5) so I booted up reach took some screenshots and now I’m forging

Ignore your light budget no matter how out of hand it appears to get, or how bad the maps starts to look because it isn’t lighting properly. Get everything the way you want it and then, at the end, you can go through the project one piece at a time and manually kill the lighting where it isn’t needed (the only way to know where it isn’t needed is to turn it off and look at the piece - most of them don’t need it). I’ve had projects where my lighting budget hit close to 180%. Turned off the lightmapping on pieces that didn’t need it, the map still looked perfect, shadows still rendered where they needed to be, and I got the budget down to about 104%.

Thanks man, i’ll try that out, I knew you could go over but I never thought to go through and turn them off for most pieces, although thats something I will do from now on, probably on the maps im working on, my linear infection one will probablya little more attention
Anyone know of simple tutorials for the new forge control system? I’ve jumped in a couple times but can’t seem to wrap my head around it…
I mainly go for outdoor crash site as my plan for a map then I just go from that
( I do outdoor stuff cause I can’t do indoor )

I used to just go along with it. But I’m now trying to plan.

You can just watch a video like this. Halo 5 Forge Tutorial - Basic Controls - YouTube I myself would just play around with it though.
