This is a map i’ve put a lot of hours into. Not just in forging, but in design as well. I spend quite a bit of time drawing the layout before i even touched forge. I wanted to be able to hit the ground running instead of problem solving the layout as i built it. Between drafting and forging I’ve easily spend over 15 hours on this arena. I had been wanting to create a breakout map i can be proud of for quite some time but wanted to pull inspiration from real-world architecture or locations. I stumbled across the seed to this map while in class. The octagonal two story concept came from the Design hall in the Art and Architecture building of UIC. Yes I am a design student :P, which is definitely why my process was so rigorous. Being an avid paintball player as well I wanted to create a layout that facilitated fast paced closer quarter gameplay that demanded maximum awareness, promoted high risk/reward scenarios, offered many different crossing firing lanes and dead spots to match, utilized 45 degree angles as much as possible, and emulated the architecture of the inspiration origin as articulately as possible - with some aesthetic fluff ;). This is the result. Right now it is essentially completed, although i have yet to test how the weapon selection and placement will influence player behavior and game flow. I am not attached to the power up and hydra placement or inclusion at the moment - it’s been rather difficult to rally an 8 man lobby willing to play breakout in a custom game. If anyone is interested in partying up to help me test this map I would greatly appreciate it. I love breakout and absolutely love designing arenas specifically for this game type. I have several other designs that are in the drafting stage right now, so there definitely will be more to come. Maybe next time around I’ll put my video editing skills to work and create a cinematic/gameplay showcase to better illustrate the space and inspire others to progress their creations.
