Forge Canvases are a joke

So why then does a blank canvas bother you so much?

Yes, yes, I know you want biomes, but you seem to not be recognizing that with the tools given, you will be able to create those biomes. Prefabricated isn’t necessary. And hell, we might even get more biomes in time. Patience is still a virtue.

RIP. Used to make social maps for my buddies back in the days of Reach - couldn’t do that as effectively in 3 but that did not stop me from forging like, entire starships and such in Foundry. And -trying- to make Sandbox work.

You are, frankly, correct. It’s going to be really interesting to see the worlds and - dare I say, canvases, that players make.

The void canvas is going to be huge for urban maps.

Because I don’t want to waste budget on trying to make the map look nice, just to then modify it.

With the vastly increased budget, I really don’t think this is going to be a problem.

People are actually complaining about having to build in forge? Damn, bro. Sorry you have to build the map. I for one am looking forward to building a fully custom BTB map, with no pre-existing obstacles in the way of creativity, especially invisible walls and ceilings. I hope there are none in the canvas, or if there are, they are in an extremely gigantic cube

I thought the Canvases looked sort of cool. They seemed like good starting points for any possible Forge project, minus a snow themed canvas (for now). It’s just a shame that the browser isn’t coming until next year, most of this Forge content will likely go unnoticed until then. The only good news about the delay with the browser is hopefully tons of content will be ready and dumped into the browser by then.

Budget is about preventing forgers from tanking the game’s performance. A static forge world contains a lot of geometry that you are unlikely to use fully. Just because forge world isn’t initially deducted from your budget, doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt performance; in fact, it was probably pre-deducted (meaning your budget still starts at 0, but the max budget is lower because of forge world’s performance cost).

Well do you have any canvases that look better? Look it’s better than nothing. What do you want for free? Your money back?

Peace! :fist_right: :fist_left:

uh, 343 gave you the blank canvases so you can make your own mountains, environments, ect. remember: you can add mountains just by scaling up the hill or dirt pile.

I would like to try and make a map that consists of smaller scaled versions of our favorites all within one big playable map. Example: Blood gulch with an area that represents beaver creek, etc…

No because I uninstalled Infinite months ago. As for canvases that look better I can name 6 off the bat:

  • Forge World - Halo Reach

  • Erosion - Halo 4

  • Forge Island- Halo 4

  • Ravine - Halo 4

  • Alpine - Halo 5

I think the point is more external character… the control you have over the maps themselves more than make up for it. I was kind of hoping for a Forge World like Reach, but in reality, Forge world could probably be created easily.

I support this idea :killionaire:

Don’t see why people are taking this with me/against me stance on this topic. Having both would be positive for various reasons.

Canvasses are great for people who really want to make something themselves. Recreate a map from a different game or something. Slap some scaled up mountains around it for the outside of the map and you’re good to go. Or just completely build the environment yourself then build the map around whatever complex stuff you came up with. However this obviously takes a lot more work/fantasy and a vision of what you want to create in the first place.

A full map akin to Forge world; take a piece of the map that has been given to you and create a map around that. It is somewhat more limiting than a canvas, but there’s still many possibilities to be had while working in this limited setting, just look at all the various Reach maps. Bonus is that because they’re limited it’s also definitely easier as a non-hardcore forger to create a little map or arena within one of these subsections on the Forge world. Just take the hangar, slap some walls in and you’ve got a small slayer map, but of course depending on how you put down the objects it will still be mostly unique to the person who built it.

343 will have to release an Awash/Tidal 2.0 before Forge World can be remade by the community- which they will probably do at some point. Ducain23 has hinted on Twitter that he will likely rebuild Forge World in Infinite. He built it on H5 with 1600 pieces & can probably do it with fewer in Infinite and still end up with a least 5400 pieces left in the budget.

Biggest update since launch and this is how you describe hours of effort and content?

It’s not even funny how incredible forge is going to be with what this community can create and implement with the new scripting options too!

one thing i still don’t get though, why are 343 still keeping the idea of the limited sized canvas? why can’t it be at least 12 times bigger than what the video shows? this is halo “INFINITE” for crying out loud! the word, INFINITE? hello???

most true editors still use standard sized canvases in AAA,
painting planes can have wild consequences.
its far more controlled to paint the preset plains.

if you boot up unity or ue canvases will be you go to method of drawing a play space and then that will be painted by a terrain tool.
its a pretty robust editor for a retail game.

be nice to have to option to paint straight terrain in a blank box but I can see it causing issues, for
technical, UI and UX.
