Forge Budget Bug, Halo: Reach MCC.

*Brief summary If you can’t be bothered to read the mess below: Forge on Reach post Halo 3 PC launch has an issue where the new budget and maximum available object limit are bugged. Even if it says you’ve got plenty of budget or plenty of that object left, after placing enough objects down, (I believe around 645 in total), you can’t place anything anymore. Not even Spawn objects which cost $0.

I’ve run into an issue on Halo: Reach’s Forge after the recent update that overhauled it and added it to PC. So there’s a large scale map project that I’ve been excited to make for a while now, but haven’t been able to do because of the limited budget. The recent update increased the budget to $30,000 and increased the object limit on a per object basis significantly, which is awesome, but I’ve encountered a pretty serious bug regarding this. So on this big map project of mine that I started on Forge World, I have $12,030 left in my budget, and tons of objects left on a per object basis. I went to place a building block, of which the menu says I have 113 left, but nothing was placed. I kept opening the menu to try and place it again, but it just wouldn’t work. I tried to place a different block instead. Nothing. Ok… so I randomly went through the Forge menu and tried to place all different kinds of objects from pretty much every category. Nothing. It seems like the game thinks I’ve run out of budget, even though I haven’t yet.

Alrighty, so with all that said, I loaded up a blank forge world map to see if I could replicate the issue. I started by trying to hit that number on the budget again as fast as possible by placing the most expensive thing in the forge pallet, vehicles. I started placing as many as I could, staring with the new MCC vehicles, and going all the way until I had almost emptied that menu. Once I got to the new falcon variants- (I started from the bottom of the list and went up, so I got to those last), I kept placing falcons until I hit that budget number again. When I did, something strange happened. It acted like the object was placed, as in it spent money on the budget and subtracted 1 from the object list, but the object didn’t appear. So without moving, I tried place more vehicles until I completely ran out of budget. At this point, I had noticed that as some vehicles I had placed despawned (this happened because they were in a pile) I was able to spawn new ones in their place, as if there’s a hard coded limit on how many vehicles the game allows to be on the map at once. With this knowledge, I deleted all the forklifts, trucks, carts, and falcons I had placed and started a new round. When the new round started I was greeted by a rather spectacular explosion and a short lived drop in my frame rate as all the vehicles I had attempted to spawn previously in that one spot spawned all at once and destroyed each other trying to occupy the same space.

After that mess, I decided to do the same thing again, but this time I’d only use structure objects. (At this point I should mention that in the current state the map I started working on is in, it only has objects from the “Structure” category placed, with the exception being one soft kill boundary, a bunch of teleporters, a few man cannons, 4 mounted machine gun turrets, and 2 vehicles from the new “Vehicles (MCC)” category, the forklift and electric cart, which are hidden as an Easter Egg on the map.) So first, I placed a ton of 1x1 blocks. After a while I checked to see how many I had placed, and so far it was 230 out of 300, it said 70 were left. So I kept spamming them down, and I the next time I went to check, the budget was almost untouched and I had 230 blocks left some how, even though none of the ones I placed already went anywhere. I recorded a clip to see what happened, and when I checked the clip, I was placing blocks, placing… placing… placing… then boom, the budget reset to $30,000 again. I went back in game and started to delete a bunch of the blocks, and with 246 blocks still placed, the budget was at $30,000 again, with 300 available blocks in the menu. I deleted one more block, and the budget went all the way down to $27,450, and I now had 45 blocks left. So I placed a block again, and now all of the sudden it reset again. 300 available blocks, $30,000 available budget. Weird…

I deleted the block again so the budget was lower ($27,450), moved on to “Bridges and Platforms”, and got to placing a ton of small bridges, this time keeping a close eye on the budget and remaining bridges in case something weird happens again. With all those building blocks still placed from before, I placed all 150 small bridges without anything weird happening. Alright… moving on to “Buildings”. I Placed all 30 without issue. Next, “Decorative”. There’s 300 available objects in this category just like “Building Blocks”, so I went with spamming Columns and started placing. I got through 210 of them, (90 left, $10,050 Budget remaining), and couldn’t place anymore. After trying to place more objects, I found I had replicated the issue I originally ran into on the map I was building. It seems there’s a hard coded limit (or bug) that prevents you from placing any more than 645 objects on the map at one time. After placing that many, I can’t even place spawn objects like spawn points and initial spawns, even though those cost $0.

This was a lot longer I had planned it to be when I started writing it, but I hope that going into as much detail as I could will be helpful in resolving this issue. If you read this far, thank you for listening, and if anyone else has run into this issue, let me know.

Edit: forgot to mention this was all on Xbox. Haven’t tried any of this on PC.

Thanks for looking into this, I can confirm that on PC for Halo Reach Forge in Forgeworld i can only spawn a maximum of 645 objects even though it still says i have $13,000+ left in the budget. im trying to make a large invasion map and this is preventing me from finishing it. Hope this gets fixed soon

Yes! I’m so glad to know that it isn’t just me.

This is really impeding my progress and I hope that it is fixed soon. 343 pls

Just hit the limit on a second map, around 7.6k this time. On to the next one I guess

This also applies to Halo 3 forge, if anyone was wondering.
On sandbox, the budget is $4500, however you can only currently place a certain amount until $3000. I assume the displayed integer was typed to be set as $4500, but in the system the actual integer remained the same.

Same here, stuck with $10,945 left in the budget. I was so confused and hoping I wasn’t the only one with the issue.

This happens as a result of each game’s original engine stopping players from spawning more than 645 objects in Reach (and something like 600 in Halo 3). To fix it, 343 will need to isolate this within each individual game’s engine and adjust it.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple; once you surpass the limit, the game itself starts to break. Objects and natural geography disappear, your gun can disappear, stuttering occurs, etc. The game quickly becomes unplayable. They’ll need to overhaul and update the game’s engine if this object limit issue is to be fixed, which isn’t easy, so this could take a while for them to fix if they do it at all.

For once, we have to blame Bungie rather than 343. We’re taking the engine farther than it was originally designed to go. Bungie never imagined these games would come to PC.

I just ran into this bug a few minutes ago. Glad that it has already been reported. I suppose I’ll have to wait to finish my map. Seems like I’m having to do a lot of waiting for this game, but I guess that’s how it goes.

Would love to see this worked on soon before the hype for mcc dies down for infinite. Might be missing out on some great forge maps.

Yeah my thoughts as well. I will still be making forge maps on Reach regardless, but its whether or not there will be player base to check them out.

I’ve been working on my forge map for years now, I just hit the limit. It’s almost saddening, really, but I was definitely able to get so much more done in this most recent update. The most painful part about this “bug” (if you can even call it that at this point, it’s the engine) is that it just happens so suddenly. I hope that 343 fix this somehow.

It’s frustrating because they didn’t address the issue in the recent community update or development update. I’m not saying they needed to by any means, but it would put me a little at ease to know that they are making progress on the problem or that they have at least aknowledged it. I know the forge player base is somewhat pale in comparison to that of multiplayer and that of course they are also working on ODST, but I hope that fixing this issue is at least receiving some level of priority.

This is still a problem, I’m experiencing it now on Xbox, 343 please fix.

3rd map down, onto the next one lol. It’s been a month now so an update from 343, regardless of the progress they’ve made on the issue (if any), would be nice.

Just read that back and I did not mean for it to sound so hostile lol. I’m sure they’re very busy, but a tiny update on whether they’re addressing the problem would be great.

I’ve encountered this on the 360. There was already an invisible budget.

I’m having this same glitch, but im on xbox. Please fix soon, this is very annoying.

I was just working on building a massive forge map in halo 4, trying to build a huge walled map from forge island. About 4 hours into building the map, I was interrupted by this item limit. I’m very dissapointed, because I was going to play with a large group of friends on this map. But now, I can’t even finish it, despite still having plenty of items available in each category, and within the budget. What’s the point of having these limits so far out, when the player hits other limits before hand that we can’t even see???

I really hope this gets fixed.

I haven’t done much in forge in years, and was just getting back into it, and I had some very ambitious ideas in mind.

All seemed to be within the limits that the game would show me. Of course, I couldn’t even see what the real limit was…

Seriously, I could have just used bigger objects for a wall if they were available to me…, and I probably could remain within these parameters…

On my Series X Master Of Chief Collection I’m experiencing an issue where I can’t see myself this needs to be addressed asap I need another update
