Now I’m sure topics like these have been addressed to death in the forums but I still thought it would be an interesting thing to bring.
Now I’m first going to throw out the Combat Evolved card. Like many others here, I too played it shortly after its release on the original Xbox but that isn’t the point that I’m trying to address. Is it strange for me to say that it wasn’t the gameplay or characters that drew me in but the environments and the background lore of the Forerunners?
Now I’ve never been a big fan of the United Nations Space Command. I’ve mostly spent more interest in the affairs of the former Covenant including Thel’s adventures in Halo 2 but that still wasn’t what drove me to pursue the series further. It was the Forerunners that did that.
The idea of a massive terraformed ring world had always fascinated me as a child and the entire plethora of locations that Combat Evolved and Halo 2 had to offer would always convince me to spend hours on end playing campaign levels over and over again just because of the sheer beauty the environments had to offer. Halo 3 and Halo 4 did this as well by offering me Installation 00 (The Ark), Installation 04-2 and Requiem, all of which gave me those same feelings I had when I was a child.
Not to mention but I adore what 343 Industries has done with the Forerunner lore. The Didact (Both of them included) is now one of my favourite characters in video-game history and I was thrilled to see Ur-Didact’s debut in Halo 4 as the antagonist of the story. I’ve also been a big fan of the Greg Bear Forerunner Trilogy and to this day, I am more fond of the Prometheans as being the driving antagonistic force then the Covenant, Storm or the Flood.
So I ask you this question. Is this mindset I have weird?
My sole love for a series is one race and their achievements in the lore and story. I enjoy the game-play of Halo but that’s not my biggest love for it. That goes to the Forerunners themselves. It is they that ultimately got me into Halo and I just find that weird because I’ve stuck with the Halo series throughout its career but have always been hoping for Forerunner presence. That’s why although I enjoyed ODST and Reach, I was saddened to see the lack of their presence in those games. I have my own thoughts about the Halo games but I would prefer to keep them hindered. Ultimately I look forward to see more of them in the future and could ultimately pay less attention to the affairs of the other factions. I just want more Forerunners.
So what do you think?
