While the hopes for a new Halo Wars is slim, I figure I may as well throw an idea in the ring. How about a Forerunner-Flood War game?
*There are 300 years worth of battles to work with.
*There are plenty of Forerunner units to use.
*There are plenty of Flood units to use.
*They could tie in with Greg Bear’s Forerunner books.
I think it could work.
I don’t really like that idea, considering it wouldn’t be “Halo” enough.
It would basically be like a completely new and different game, virtually having nothing to do with Halo unless you’re a fan already and already know the story. Imagine what new fans would think. They would have no idea it had similarities to the Halo game franchise’s story or features.

Agreed.

Hey hey hey, I think the OP is onto a great idea. Let’s not shoot this out of the air simply because of your personal bias. Greg Bear’s books, and the Flood/Forerunner War plays a huge role into Halo’s backstory, and an RTS would be the best way to flesh out the grand scale of this war.
Besides, who even knew what planet Harvest was before Halo Wars? Only one book came out (Contact: Harvest) talking about the planet, and Halo Wars didn’t even have Sergeant Johnson or any of the more easily recognizable characters from Halos 1-3. Neither did Reach, for that matter. It is important to note that Halo: ODST, Reach, and Wars were all spin-offs, and they don’t have to relate to whatever Master Chief is doing at X moment in time. No one knew about Noble Team, the Rookie, Anders, Cutter, or Serena before those games.
If done right, this Halo Wars sequel could be amazing.

It would exactly be like a completely new and different game having EVERYTHING to do with Halo. If it wasn’t for the Forerunners then we wouldn’t have the Halos, humanity, the prophets and the relics… everything that is in the rest of the games is there because of the Forerunners.
I think this is a great idea. If somebody was new to the franchise this would be a good place to jump into the story… better than where I started anyway. My first game was Halo 3. Some aliens were good, some were bad… shooting… destroying… Hey look a ship with a parasite landed on Earth… WHA?!
I think that anybody can start anywhere with the Halo story and still enjoy the games and become a fan. It’s not like the games have been released in chronological order to begin with anyway.

i think that would be neat but it better have that awesome CGI cutscenes
honestly this is the first good idea for a true halo wars sequel I’ve heard past a “post war” story. I would love to see this the only issue is taking the mystique away from the forrunners but then again the cryptum books (though i’ve heard they are good) kinda did that so I got no issues GO FOR IT 343
I don’t think that a RTS would be a good way to tie in the forerunners since we would fight using ‘human tactics’ and in actuality we wouldn’t really be learning anything since we can’t think like a Forerunner for obvious reasons

Your point is invalid. We must remember, it’s still a game, and if something is fun, you should be obligated to include it in the game regardless of minor canonical discrepencies. Personally, I believe that if a game were to cover the forerunner-flood war, a class-based shooter would cover it as well, if not better than an RTS, as the forerunners themselves are a class-based society with healers, warriors, builders, and the like. I you think about it, it might be something like Wars; a stand-alone entry into the Halo universe, free of most canonical limitations. It might might be like reach’s overarching storyline, due to the fact that we know what the end result is, the fall of the forerunner empire to the flood, and the engame solution activated.
Regardless of story topic, I think that another Halo RTS entry should be made due to the fact that something as radical as Wars can suceed and exceed expectations. Wars showed us that new things can be tried in the franchise and work; it just has to be done right, with careful considerations taken into gameplay, environment design, and story. THE RTS entry was a great risk taken be Ensemble, and we can see that with the ambition and audacity to make something new, you can do great things.

I love this post I’m just sayin it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside
cause it just validated this as a good idea to me again I say it 343 GET ON IT
Thank you for the comment, but back on topic.
I think that Wars did a much better job of giving the player feel like a planet was under attack than even Reach or ODST. The best example of this are the Arcadia levels; they helped paint a much better pictue of what a city under attack by the Covenant would look like with thousands of people trying to escape alive as covenant squads fired at them. This shows the brutality of the covenant much better than some ape-bear things jumping off of a dropship. I think that the levels showed a city being glassed much better than even New alexandria in Reach, even if we didn’t see the glassing itself. Seein the ruins of structures, and seeing that people actually lived there had a much greater emotional impact to me than seeing some random, lifeless building fall. I think that if we see what it is that we’re fighting to protect, levels like new alexandria and games loke ODST will have much larger emotional impacts on the player, rather than just seeing an occupied, lifeless city be destroyed.
