Forerunner Art Style Missing Something

And I can’t lay my finger on it.

Take a look at these pictures and tell me what you think:

Halo 3 Citadel

Halo 5 Coliseum

I actually think the Halo 5 one looks awesome.

Engravings. They’re missing the engravings.

That, and other colors besides various shades of grey…

To me there’s something gone that makes it feel ancient. Engravings on the walls perhaps?

Haha just typed the same thing without noticing this

Halo 5 looks better, with more vivid colors, and less grey drabness. The Halo 3 has more bland everything.

Halo 5’s Forerunner architecture is only different shades of grey…

epitaph.

I wanna say Halo 3 gives me more of a Dune/Star Trek vibe, which does not make it bad at all. I just really like this Halo 5 take on forerunner art, I can’t pin point what it reminds me of.

Tron? But more metallic.

Exactly, it’s so weird. I think the lines on 343’s Forerunner stuff make it look like some kind of big circuit board, and everything’s all silver and bright and new-looking.

The “ancient” feel of the old style for me I think comes from that “futuristic cathedral” design, contrasting colors and darkness, as well as the engravings of course.

OMG thank you. No wonder I like it so much, Tron is one of my favorite Art stylized movies ever, of all time.

two completely different styles both given the name forerunner, the closest thing to the 343 style is halo wars, which is still very different, two different interpretations

It’s engraving stuff, if 343i would add more engravings, I think it’d be great.

Halo wars
Halo 4They are very similar. Halo 3’s is really old, 343 has more of a “newer” look.

343 also left the mantle engravings out. 343 added lines instead.

The old style reminded me of a circuit board, actually… go figure.

At any rate, 343 has got the basics down. It just needs more texture. More ‘breaks’ in the geometry,

Halo 3 forerunner architecture tends to use a bit more brown than the new stuff. Sometimes it seems better. But I recently was playing through the Halo 3 mission the Covenant, and man oh man the building you go into after killing the two Scarabs is so ugly I don’t understand how Bungie let that slide. I never noticed it but it looks pretty bad.

Yeah, i was meaning more of a Tron-like thing as the other guy said lol.

But I think it all comes down to needing more texture as you said (that Citadel pic has SO many different shapes and patterns) as well as a bit more color and that “dark and desolate” feel.

Yeah it’s pretty ugly, but I’m thinking stuff like that came down to sacrificing details for a giant play space back then.

It seems the only style that 343 has stayed faithful to is Covenant architecture, and even then, everything Covenant looks like it’s made of insects now.

Conveniently in the lore the forerunner architecture can vary to wide degrees. I think we are seeing more Promethean architecture with Colosseum.
