This is a new type of thing that I might be posting every now and then. Just things that are bouncing around in my head, thinking out loud, etc. There’s no real stance in here or anything like that. No right or wrong, just thinking out loud for the whole world to see (and for some to inevitably judge).
So here’s some food for thought: Is Classic Halo slow?
Movement speed itself has never been really fast. It’s just a normal speed but we find opponents pretty quickly and action is never too far away on 4v4 maps. Can we say that Halo is a fast game based off of our movement? I think (for the moment) that Halo’s fast paced gameplay is held responsible by the maps and weapons. Maps like Midship make for some hectic and nonstop action but isn’t it more likely that it’s that way because Midship is small enough to easily throw a grenade across the map? I mean, if you hold up on the left stick for a few seconds from your base it will take you only a few seconds to be halfway across the map.
What about maps that are way bigger like Colossus? Isn’t it because we have a weapon that is capable of shooting accurately at longer distances, the Battle Rifle? If we played on a map that was big with long sight lines while using a BR, movement speed wouldn’t be the primary cause for fast-paced gameplay anymore would it?
I suppose the main question here is this: Is Halo, at it’s core, a fast-paced shooter? Or does it’s speed come primarily from map design and weapons?
A lot of it has to do with a low FOV. But outside of combat, classic Halo can feel extremely slow. In combat, classic Halo can feel faster paced, but still pretty slow.
All the sprint related threads recently, it’s glorious.
No classic Halo is not slow to me, quite fast paced on the contrary even in Halo 3, I yearn to play the MCC but there’s so many signs keeping me away.
Yes, very. After playing Titanfall, Destiny and Advanced Warfare, MCC Halo could put me to sleep.
edit: I’m talking about PvP. The MCC campaigns are as good as ever.
It can depend on the map and the number of players. For most Team Slayer/objective modes, I feel classic Halo was very fast-paced.
Normally when I play with my group of friends we play through a variety of the playlist: slayer, btb, action sack, snipers, etc. We really enjoy most of the games, but what I do notice is that when halo 4 gets chosen all I hear is “o yes! I can sprint.” And to an extent it does come across as a positive thing.
Put this in the general forums next time plz
But to answer your question, it always has seemed to be a slow game at its core.

I suppose it can be related to sprint. Just not right now. It might be later but for now lets just towel ourselves off.
What do you think is responsible for Halo’s speedy gameplay?
People underestimate just how fast the movement speed is, and that annoys me. Even ignoring the +10% buffs given to it in competitive settings, Halo 4, and so on, it’s still much, much faster than walking in CoD, Battlefield, etc. I’d even go so far as to say I walk as fast in Ce as I sprint in some other games.
“Is Classic Halo slow?”
That depends on which title, which map, which settings, so on. Halo 3 is a lot slower than Halo Ce is for a wide range of reasons. Faster killtimes, smaller maps, more frequent weapon spawns, the fact you can actually hit someone when you see them…
8+ million people didn’t buy and play Halo CE, 2, or 3 because they were slow games.

Welcome! I’m going to have to make a special red carpet just for you, Ramirez
Base movement speed is definitely faster than games like CoD and BF4 but I was just wondering if it’s the movement speed that truly makes Halo a fast-paced game.

Not really what I was getting at specifically but alright.

Nothing in particularly, just the games were designed so well that engagements never toke so long to get into, despite what gametype i’m playing.
Any breaks in the action is entirely your doing, and likely to replenish your shields or weapons before going back in the fight.
(No carpet for me huh? I see how it is.)

In comparison to more up to date titles, yes. The old games were great back in the day, they should not be used as a comparison to today’s games. It’s like comparing bananas of today, to original bananas. They just don’t really compare due to updates and tweaks.

I’ll give you a pink one and that’s that.

Make it hot pink and you got a deal.
The classic games seemed just fine at the time, but its the nature of things to become comfortable with the current title, and compared to H4 the others really do seem very slow. I don’t play Call of Duty but I’ve seen enough footage on youtube to know that classic Halo is comparatively glacial. I’m not trying to put a value judgment on any of this - it’s just observation. Guardians certainly felt even faster than 4, though not quite CoD fast. I know I won’t like that at first, but after the H6 beta we’ll have this conversation again and I’ll be just as apprehensive because I’ll finally have adjusted to Guardians. And Halo 4 Anniversary will seem insanely slow. It’s a circle-of-life kind of thing.
Were they fast paced? Yes, they are objectively faster than the modern games.
Do they feel faster? That depends on the person. For me, it’s still yes, especially CE after replaying some online matches. The higher FOV, fluid flow, simplistic and ingenious map design, and solid balance and mechanics makes it feel way more fast paced than any of it’s sequels, including Halo 2.

I think you summed it up nicely, Vex. Very nice.
