343 are focusing on the wrong types of changes, from what I have heard of them so far.
I would firstly like to point out that there is one thing which a Halo player will hold dear to them about the original Halos, and makes Halo arguably better than other games because of this. It’s that everyone starts equal.
That being said, Halo consists of players fighting with the tools given to them on maps. Bungie have exhausted the evolution of players to a point where people are happy with that. 343 are trying to really focus on changing the tools given to the players, such as perks, sprint, weapons, etc. However Bungie too reached a point in which there was no more room to develop the individual Spartan’s tools without it seeming clustered. So 343 are having to split these tools across different classes of Spartans so that overall there’s a wide variety of tools for the player to use, but these aren’t necessarily all usable at the same time.
Now to me there’s an obvious flaw here, is that firstly this goes against the main fundamentals of Halo (excluding Reach, because that was considered not a Halo game by many). And secondly, they’re missing out on a huge opportunity for development in another field of play which doesn’t affect these fundamentals since it is inherently universal across everyone playing.
Maps.
Aside from the static basic geometry of maps, in Halo there are 4 other components. Teleporters, Man-cannons, explosives and shields.
In Reach only man-cannons and shields were really used at all, teleporters were pretty much limited to custom games and explosives never served a purpose, only to fill in the blanks on boring maps.
Think about it, we’re in the sci-fi genre, with a HUGE room for alien technology to do whatever the hell we like in terms of non-competitive attracting additions.
So. firstly, do you agree with this?
Secondly, please post some ideas of what could be added to maps to differentiate them from the boring stuff we see in literally every shooter. (A common complaint from casuals about Reach was that the maps were bad, and this would definitely attract them in my opinion.)
