Focused Search is Broken

At least for those of us in the north part of the US. Latency is worse than ever. Even when teaming up with someone local, our competition was either from Texas or foreign…and there was major latency. Never competing against people in the same region. Southern US has home server advantage against the world. Focused searches aren’t working.

I don’t think the search preferences do anything. I think they are just there.

I am experiencing latency, I play in NY. Not tech savvy enough to know where the issue is. My connection or 343. I am connected on open nat, I have done all I could.

Like the close door button on a skyscraper elevator. Just for show.

I totally agree with you. I had to call it early tonight. I got all the same players you had… Im in the north central US. I knew I was in for a ruff game when none of them spoke English… I don’t get why the heck we cant connect to the server closest to us… Whats up with that??? That “Focused” option is like butt wipe paper! LOL.

Initially I thought search preferences would help but I dont think it does anything.

I agree… I don’t think they are doing anything. Theres something up with this and really I wish they would just give us Server Selection. At least that way I know where im being connected. Im not looking for perfection in each game but just some normal consistency would be nice… I don’t think that is asking too much…

In all fairness focused did increase my jip.

I really don’t think its on your end to be honest… Are you experiencing lag only? Or are you getting disconnected?

The lag has been extremely bad for me since Monday. I’ve had issues before that (since Region Lock was removed) but this week has been unplayable. The funny thing is all of my issues come while playing Arena. If I try Warzone, it runs perfectly fine but I can’t stand Warzone.

Uh, please fix already!

I think you guys are misunderstanding focused search.

> - Focused: Narrow search to find the best match based on your fireteam’s skill and connection. Search times may be longer than normal.

IF you actually bother to read, these search parameters find you games based on YOUR skill and YOUR connection. So you will get games which are more balanced skill wise, but if you’re experiencing latency it will be on your end, not the servers. The point of focus search isn’t necessarily meant to give you games with less latency, unless you have good connection. It is meant to give you games where you will be matched against players of the same or similar skill levels, and it should have the added effect of good connection if you have good connection.

The issue is its not doing that. The lag has gotten worse on Halo 5 and its not my connection. I can play any other game just fine without the inconsistencies that I am experiencing on Halo 5. Before this, I never had an issue. Whatever they’ve done needs to be reverted back because NONE of the 3 options given offer less lag. It’s the same.

I have gone and tried Battlefield 4, Black Ops 3, NHL 16, Forza 6, Titanfall, etc. None of these games lag or at least not beyond what’s expected. So again, my connection didn’t get worse. The games servers/matching got worse.

This is with a top tier internet. So yeah, not on my end and I can say that without a doubt.

No. Having a good connection has nothing to do with that. You can have the best connection. If you ping over a 100 to a server that someone else is pinging around 30 to, you will lose most of the time if that other person is even close to your skill level.

A few days ago, I had low latency. I had my KDA over 7 through my first 8 games. Averaged well over 10 headshots a game that night. Since then…having a hard time getting to 10 kills of any kind. Latency makes a significant difference. When 343 puts me on a local server for a day, I’ll make my run back to Diamond. Until then, I’ll continue getting smoked by Golds. My personal connection doesn’t change. The servers do.

lag only.

Well then your complaint should be with server matching, not focused search preferences. Because if you have good connection and you are experiencing more latency, then it is the servers you are connecting to which is the problem not the search preferences which are working as they should.

I check my latency/ping pretty regularly to xbl using the detailed network statistics in the settings menu. It is consistently regardless of time of day, month, whatever, been at 85ms. So are you sure you latency bounces around?

To give you an idea, just ran one.

Ethernet connection with OPEN NAT
DS 24.3
US 26.2
Packet loss 1%
MTU 1480
Latency 85ms

What does bounce around is packet loss, no packet loss = no lag. When it has been 0, I get no lag, but my latency is still at 85ms.
I do not know if packet loss occurs at my ISP or MS.

Placebo effect.

Ive read the search parameters. Focused should be more precise matching you. And as far as connection is concerned these should be based on ping…Otherwise it would almost be pointless to even have such searches…

Regional server selection is what we need. I have the same issues many others do. It used to be ok, don’t know what changed.

Haha, maybe. For me, it’s the “skill” level matching that doesn’t seem to work.
