So I’ve come back from a long break of Halo and of course I’m even worse than I’ve ever been. I know that the game uses your past ranks to determine your matches in the first 10, but now that I’m ranked I’m still getting matched with high ranks. I don’t understand. I have it set on focused, and I’ve yet to play with one gold player. It’s all diamonds and onyx.
When you ranked this season, your rank was set 200 points behind your actual skill (to give you a reason to keep playing after qualifying). 200 points is four tiers. You qualified at Gold 6, so your actually skill level at the time of qualifying was Plat 4. Therefore it’s not surprising that you had situations where you matched against Diamond players; especially since in those games, you had Diamonds on your team. Matchmaking is based on skill, not rank; you ranked at Gold but are actually Platinum. If the population was higher, you’d probably match with other platinum more often. But chances are those Diamonds and Onyx players had been queued up for awhile, and the game threw them in a match they were favored to win just to get them a game.
Looking through your game history, I do see that you had alot of games against diamonds, but in those games you had diamonds on your team as well (I saw one game where you had an Onyx on your team). So, the average rank of each team was still about even.
So I went through my recent 18 ranked games and got these results. 9 Champions, 20 Onyxs, 68 Diamonds, 8 Platinums, 1 Gold, and 14 Unranked. I don’t think it’s relevant, but the teams were balanced alright, although I feel like the enemy team was favored more often in all of the games that weren’t balanced perfectly. Again, I don’t think that’s relevant.
So as you said, I think it’s just a population issue. What are the best times I should be searching to have more people around my skill level?

It would help to play with a full team rather than going in solo, too. I don’t think it’s a population issue, its just that you have to show improvement in skill and win ALOT in order to rank up
I don’t understand. I’m not worried about ranking up, I was just annoyed that it seemed like everyone I was matched with wasn’t at my skill level.
As the population of the game decreases (it is over two and a half years old after all), the potential for larger skill gaps increases. The best way to combat this is to play with a full fireteam of players who are your same rank. Other than that, I’d just try out playing during different times of the day to see what time has the best matches for your timezone. I know for me (EST) I was unable to find matches before 12pm, and the later in the day I played, the better my matches generally became (to an extent).

From what I understand, it’s constantly testing you to see how you play against players who are ranked higher and lower than you. That’s why there’s such a difference in skill levels

It’s not so much as testing players but having an acceptable range that certain skill levels can match against. For example champions are usually limited to only facing diamonds at the lowest (that’s diamond MMR so while CSR may be lower the player’s skill level should be diamond).
However, since KPM is such a good indicator of which team will win the ranking system takes into account how well you should do in the given match and adjusts your MMR based on how well you actually did. So to go up in rank you need to player better than expected of you. But in terms of just matching players it’s based on connection and trying to make the fairest match possible with restrictions on who you can match at some range.

I think the bottom line here is that you need to always been playing very well and always beating higher level players. You should also do your best to make the loses small and very close
I don’t know what you mean by the bottom line. This isn’t about ranking up.
If I was in your shoes I would play custom games since there are no ranks and practice. Play slayer and ffa for a week or two and I guarantee you’ll be better.
