Can anyone give me a reasonable explanation why 5 games in a row, I’ve been matched against diamond level players when I’m just a gold 3 (playing doubles)? I thought that choosing a focused search preference meant that it would search until it had a good skill level match. It seems that I have better luck in balanced search. Like, wtf… This is super frustrating and it’s not like I’m waiting more than a few seconds to find a match so it seems like it’s just finding first available
Matchmaking is based on several parameters, including average skill level of fireteam. Matchmaking is affected by population of the playlist, so if there aren’t that many people playing the playlist, it could result in some less-than-fair matches. It looks like you were solo queued for your Doubles games since you were generally playing with different people every time. This can introduce more variability because the system has to match you with a teammate first (or maybe it tries to match everyone at the same time, I don’t know). Nevertheless, since the average rank of the team is what matters, you can get matched against other teams who have one really high ranker and one really low ranker that average to something close to your rank. I don’t know how the system views unranked people, though; probably uses your rank from last season as a basis. It could be that because you are using focused, the system is trying to find you the fairest match with the best connection, and maybe the connection strength gets prioritized more. Honestly there are too many variables to try to narrow down what could be going on.
Meh, by that logic it shouldn’t pair up a gold 2 and a gold 5 (me) versus a plat 2 and a gold 6, for example. I’d also venture to guess that in those instances I was speaking of, the diamond player was paired with someone about as ranked as my partner and I, like gold-something. Anyway, I’m sure it’s a mystery. Choosing focused or balanced doesn’t seem to affect how quickly I find matches. Both are pretty lightning quick

I’m diamond 6 in Slayer, if i search with balanced/focused my wait time increase suddenly up to 15/20 minutes to say the least… On certain playlists simply doesn’t find games and expanded is the only way. Of course i meet champions with awful lag
Location is one of the elements as 343 said this should result in less laggy matches.
