Assuming Chief goes back and forth from a FOB and gathers a bunch of UNSC forces what activities from friendly NPCs would you like to see and possibly join in on between missions? A group of marines playing Dominoes? Gym area with Odst lifting weights? Listening to conversations of human engineers working on slispace generators, turrets, vehicle engines and complaining about Banished raids?
This is not a counterinsurgency. For obvious reasons, there are no FOBs in a decisive action near peer fight.
Were the UNSC more established and not on the run, they’d be able to put down roots like FOBs and major fortifications. Given what little we know about the state of the galaxy, putting down roots is the opposite of what the UNSC can do, let alone should do. Love the idea from an RPG standpoint, but it’s not likely to work out that way.
I’m going to be really honest with you. I really do not want a hub in Halo Infinite. I really, really do not want a hub in the slightest. I don’t want dialogue options, and I really don’t want Chief to play monopoly with Marines.
No, thank you, I had enough of that in Halo 5’s “walking simulator” levels…

I didn’t say any dialogue option just listening to NPCs talk and try an activity. Who has time for monopolies? Dominoes is a quick play em and pack up game. It look likes it will have a hub though, Infinite too big to have conventional linear missions of the shoot, cutscene, and shoot again.

Hub worlds in an FPS like Halo will usually be to the detriment of the game. Grinding the game down to a halt, and providing a superficial RPG element just bloats the game, and adds a detractive element to the gameplay. Breaking up the gameplay loop is very rarely a good idea. Dark Souls can manage a hub area, but Dark Souls and Halo are two very different styles of games, with very different gameplay foundations. Not to mention genres. Just because Infinite is a pseudo-open world game (whatever that means) doesn’t mean it will be an RPG. But who knows. 343i hasn’t told us anything regarding the matter so far, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Also, pardon my bluntness; I own dominoes, but I never play them. I’ve never met a single person who has. So I’m not sure if its going to be the hot commodity of the 26th century that you think it will be. Regardless, I certainly hope we aren’t still playing monopoly in 2558.

ODST is open world and infinite will follow a similar format. There is not actual hub

ODST isn’t open world in the strictest sense. It’s got a central hub, but there are only a handful of distinct missions you can go on. There are no side quests or secondary objectives like you would see in a true open world game.

the definition of open-world is having a world open that you can explore. Side missions or secondary objectives are not requirements. If you go to the streets mission in ODST, you can track the entire city map. That map is essentially open world. It’s one that expands as the game foes one. From what’s been told of infinite, that’s exactly how infinite will function. Only different being, it will lack the hard transitions of ODST

All of those. Marine banter has always been incredible in Halo since the start!

Hunting for audio logs through the city is the 2009 Halo version of side quests. Finding all of them leads to a variety of styles of combat encounters and game play, much like the point of side quests.
It’s not a 1-1 comparison, but it’s the early bare bones version of the concept.

We haven’t actually been told that Infinite is “open-world”, just that it features “open level design” with some side-objectives. For me, that brings to mind levels like Silent Cartographer or Winter Contingency, but on a larger scale.

we have had it described to us and it functions similar to that of odst. Its not a true open world till the end of the game. From there, you can backtrack through all the zones.
