Halo 3: ODST albeit short was a game that I greatly appreciated. It made the universe feel so much more scary because you weren’t a big bad Spartan. I’m definitely not the first to suggest nor post about it, but I’d love to someday see another game like ODST that revolves around playing as UNSC personnel and their encounter with the flood. Almost like a dead-space type of game. It’d be great for it to be a multiple perspective campaign much like that of ODST where you play practically everyone in the squad. Say a small frigate or other vessel comes into contact with the Flood for the first time (very reminiscent of The Mona Lisa), and the Flood basically overrun the ship and leave it immobilized in space (this would be great as a bunch of mid-campaign missions, maybe leave in some normal operations against the Covenant early on, so we can get attached the Marine/ODST squads before they’re divided and fighting for their lives). Say maybe one squad of these marines get an SOS beacon out and we see a Spartan team or special personnel sent to rescue survivors, it’d be great to be fighting alongside and not as Spartans, to see them towering over a foot above your head beating Flood Infection forms into dust. Maybe the ships survivors are given a countdown until the rescue forces pull out and the ship is inevitably nuked to exterminate the Flood. I’d love for it to be like the beginning of the Battlefield 1 story missions, where once the soldier you’re playing as dies, you simply carry on as the other members of the squad. No checkpoints, no respawning, and you get actually upset when you lose one of the characters because maybe you were attached to their personality. Now you have to play as the jerk mechanic who always mouths off when fixing Warthogs. I don’t know. I don’t ever expect it to happen, but it would be really neat if it did.
If I read that correctly, you play as a member of a squad of Marines, fighting the Flood, trying to survive until extraction? And each time you die you continue from exactly the same point as the next member of your team? This sounds completely in the realm of possibility.
A while ago I’d floated a similar idea, only it was Unggoy trying to escape High Charity before the Flood consumed everything.
Dang I like this idea A LOT. Especially the part about fighting alongside a Spartan so we can get a true in-game contrast. Haven’t seen a Spartan on the battlefield with a marine since the days of H3 and Reach, and even then we played as the Spartan instead of the marines.
