Fletcher's Syndrome

Hi,

I was watching Halo: The Fall of Reach and heard the mention of Fletcher’s Syndrome. Can someone explain what this is?

Based on the Halo Wiki Fletcher’s Syndrome and Parkinson’s Disease is a possible effect of “Alteration of bioeletrical nerve transduction to shielded electronic transduction. 300% increase in subject reflexes. Anecdotal evidence of marked increase in intelligence, memory, and creativity”, leading me to believe that it is most probably a neural issue.

It isn’t real.

It’s essentially an immunity to the Flood, which is why Sgt Johnson survived infection.

You’re thinking of Boren’s Syndrome, which is actually a hoax. Johnson was not immune to the Flood.

Why are these traits undesirable?

Except that Dr. Halsey confirmed he had Flood DNA in his system and his own testimony confirmed that he had been attacked by infection forms that unsuccessfully tried to infect him. If the Flood had chosen not to infect him, you think they just would have ignored him all together, like they did to the humans in the Tram in Primordial. Considering he wasn’t a raving half-naked alien zombie, I’d say it appears he was immune

the Boren’s Syndrome story (referred to as the “Paris/BS Spoof”), was a hoax to cover up Johnson’s involvement in the ORION Project, and his survival from the Flood was solely due to his ability to fight off the parasite before it could infect him thanks to his augmented physique and superior skill, as opposed to an actual immunity.

Johnson’s supposed biological immunity to the Flood as a result of Boren’s Syndrome was originally presented as factual in the novel Halo: First Strike. As stated by Joseph Staten here, Bungie disliked the notion of a Flood immunity and established the disease as being fictitious on page 122 of the Halo Graphic Novel. As stated in the introduction to Breaking Quarantine, the comic was intended to further cement Bungie’s original vision for Johnson’s escape from the Flood. The comic indicates that he simply fought his way out of the containment facility and did not suffer lacerations which would expose him to Flood infection in the process.

There is a theory that a small amount of people are immune to the Flood, such as Jenkins, the dead marine in Halo: CE. For whatever reason, the Flood avoids assimilating them into combat forms, but rather focus on killing the subject and using their biomass to further develop a Gravemind, I think the fact that Jenkins wasn’t taken to the crashed CCS Cruiser to be assimilated into the onboard Proto-Gravemind like Captain Keyes was, is merely a plot hole.

The current line of thinking from 343i is that Johnson and some species(Sharquoi) might be resistant to the Flood but they’re not immune. As far as they’re concerned there’s no immunity to the Flood.

Jenkins became a carrier/combat form

He became a combat form, but remained sentient, but without control over his body.
He later got killed by the crash of the Truth and Reconcilation at the end of the Flood.

As replying to SSG Johnson comments

From what I remember, and i could be wrong, it was a myelo-digenerative disorder that caused random but sparse seizures which were caused by random spinal neurons firing which wasnt as “efficient” as the medical norms of persons. As I recall in the “Contact Harvest” novel, he was taking medications for said disorder and that was what I supposed translated over to his “immunity” towards the flood. It was supposed to be a terminal illness but he had a mutation of the disorder or disease that kept it from reaching the terminal stage. If anyone had any disagreements or corrections to this, I’d love to hear them. Thanks
