Flag Dropping - A Logical Compromise

Waypoint Community,

I’m sure we are all aware by now of the changes to Halo 4 CTF, but for those of you who are not, I will list them:

-You cannot drop the flag
-It’s automatically picked up when you walk over it
-You can wield a Magnum (6sk/8rpc) with infinite ammo while you carry the flag
-You have a waypoint over you at all times while you carry the flag
-Music plays when you pick up the flag, similar to the phase transitions from Invasion
-The flag now shows a countdown to being reset as opposed to requiring you to manually return it

These are major deviations from the original CTF formula fans of Halo have grown accustomed to. I have reason to believe this change was fueled by the outcry of a portion of the community in regards to Flag Juggling. This seems to be 343’s remedy to the Flag Juggling dilemma, but I must say that this is not the best route to go.

I will not share my opinions on Flag Juggling in the OP, but I will offer an alternative.

In order to appease both those who were unsatisfied with Flag Juggling, as well as those who do not like this new system, I think the following should occur instead:

-Bring back the ability to drop the flag, however
-When you drop the flag, it stays where you dropped it. You can no longer throw the flag, thus eliminating ‘flag juggling’.
-Remove cooldown from dropping the flag, and keep the flag carrier at default speed

This will eliminate the need for flag juggling because now you’ll walk at normal speed and be able to drop the flag.

This is my opinion of course, but I feel this would have been a much more appropriate way around the Flag Juggling ‘issue’. If this isn’t what 343 has in mind for Infinity gametypes, I hope this alternative makes it into the classic gametypes at the very least.

Or we could just retain the flag carrier cooldown from Halo Reach. which prevents you from picking it up immediately afterwards.

You’re welcome to agree or disagree.

Flag juggling allowed you to to tricky things inorder to cap the flag faster, for example, tossing the flag to a teammate on a high floor. Armor lock is more annoying than flag juggling, why did they have to mess with it. No big reason or demand to take of flag juggling there are so many other complaints and advice they should really be listening to.

Sounds reasonable. If they could also get rid of the automatic pickup that would be great as well.

All they could’ve done was make dropping the flag take a few seconds.

> All they could’ve done was make dropping the flag take a few seconds.

Oh great, now master chief is too dumb to instantly take his grip off a flag pole?

You should still be able to throw the flag, but since you have default speed flag juggling wouldn’t be a problem. But you would still be able to pass it up to your mate on a higher level.

Sure, when he has a Flagnum to deal with.

Honestly, I personally don’t mind. I can shoot with my Magnum and anyone who knows how to use one will do just fine unless they get overwhelmed. I’m satisfied with how it is right now if I’m gonna be honest with you.

I think their reasoning behind it is they want the flag carrier to feel special and important. They stated numerous times that they want to appeal to newer gamers. That’s great for newer players, but for everyone else…

Wat. 6 Shots to kill, but only 8 in the clip? While you’re slowed and unable to jump properly? I’d love to see that, and if you could pull it off consistently against players with actual thumbs, then I would be amazed, and reccomend you try and join the pro circuit.

Me in

Well it looks like if I ever play CTF in Halo 4 I will definitely not be trying to get the flag. I usually leave that up to other people and then defend them. Say you had rockets and then just accidentally ran over the flag while getting ready to shoot someone (say, running backwards to give yourself space from someone chasing you with a shotgun), imagine what kind of problems that could cause.

I think the rest of the stuff sounds reasonable, except for the auto pick up.

Yea really, the auto pickup should be the first to go.

But really, somebody will probably just say that ‘if you have rockets, you shouldn’t be going for the flag’

-_-

No. I don’t want a compromise. I want a flag gametype that isn’t stupid.
