First Impressions and Bugs

A few bugs and issues I’ve had:

controller layout - my son turned on a second controller and my Xbox auto signed him in. I then was forced to use Halo 4 controller layout. I could change it in the settings, and indicators in game would show the buttons they were supposed to be, but I was still on the H4 layout. Had to force close and reboot to get bumper jumper back.

Poor geometry on Truth (midship) - there are some inclined walls that you can walk up, which is fine with me, but a couple of them in the rooms “stick” you. You have to jump and shimmy to get off the wall. Happens often.

Overall, matchmaking has been pretty stable. Very few disconnects or problems searching. Teams don’t seem to be balanced though in terms of player skill.

Impressions, likes/dislikes:

New sprint - I’m not sold on sprint yet, but it is certainly an improvement over reach/4. I don’t find myself even trying to sprint out of bad situations very often because it’s just not as effective.

As a side note on sprinting, I’ve noticed that taking damage sometimes prevents sprint altogether. Doesn’t happen all the time though. So not sure if this is a new mechanic or just a bug. Needs to be one or the other and not random though.

Gunplay - IMO, there’s way too much flinch when taking damage. Outside of that, gunplay is basically perfection.

Guns - The BR is worthless. Just take it out completely. I know, I know, nostalgia. I get it. I love the BR of yesteryear. But it’s trash in H5. Either make it worth using or don’t bother at all. The DMR is perfection. The pistol is good. The AR is a beast like it should be. SMG totally destroys CQC. Overall, I really like the guns.

GROUND POUND - Dumbest idea for Halo EVER. Seriously. But the mechanic is basically worthless. I spent 3 full matches just trying to ground and pound, and was able to get a kill one time. Another time during standard gameplay I landed a kill with it also. So, IMO it doesn’t break anything because it’s just worthless. But when you get get a kill with it… Completely cheap, random game mechanic that serves no real purpose whatsoever.

Grenades - Maybe it’s just me but grenades seem off. Sometimes they feel way UP. Other times I don’t feel like I should’ve gotten a kill at all because I only put 1-2 shots. Might just be some lag or whatever. Haven’t quite put my finger on it yet.

Clambor - Perfection. Excellent flow. Feels great. Adds so many more lines on a map. Love it.

Visuals - My only complaint is the under suit. Spartans gloves look pleather or plastic. Looks stupid. Bring back black under suit.

Overall, it’s pretty fun. But it still isn’t Halo. I’m afraid it may suffer the same fate of Halo 4.

I am very happy with the direction halo 5 is going. I was a sceptic when I seen the first announcement trailer, but after getting my hands on it I see the vision and I’m a believer. At first play I didn’t like the BR either, but after understanding and learning the new mechanics of the game, I feel I am the most accurate with it over the DMR. The sniper I the might have a little too much auto aim, I was no scoping people like crazy with it, so it needs some tuning.

Here are my top 5 issues so far :

  1. You can’t quick scope with the sniper
  2. When you’re scoped with any weapon is slows down your movement
  3. Weapons need to be more visible in battle, so you can detect what it is instead of having to look at it or walk over it.
  4. Quicker recovery from Spartan charge.
  5. Tone down grenades a bit.

What do you mean your movement slows down when scoped. That is not supposed to happen, this better be a big lie. I won’t tolerate 343 lying some more.
