First ever Halo 4 vid

Hey guys, I finally made my first Halo 4 multiplayer vid. Check it out on YouTube! SWAT B&W Edition Episode #1

Subscribe and comment on how to improve please!

Ehh, it was OK.

It’s a tad campy in a lot of spots, and you don’t seem to make very good decisions. More than once you chased your enemy, popped up after 3 misses or just seemed to not go a very smart direction. A lot of the times you don’t cover your back, and it doesn’t look like you pay very much attention to your surroundings at all.

The Black and White was interesting, but it’s kind of annoying at the same time.

Sorry if that comes off as harsh, it’s not meant to. (Also, I’m no master Halo player, I just called it as I saw it). It just wouldn’t make me come back every week for a new video…

Either way, keep up the videos! You only get better with practice!

Hey, that’s not harsh at all. I asked for opinions, so I want the truth. What exactly do you mean by “bad decisions”? I’m always looking to improve, it’s part of the point to my making these vids.

Eh, chasing mostly. You tend to put yourself at a disadvantage when you chase (especially around a corner when you don’t know how many enemies are over there), and there were a lot of times it seemed like you pushed when you should have retreated.

My main suggestions: Don’t Challenge too often. Not to say just sit in one spot, but don’t put yourself out there too much unless you know you’re safe.

Flanking. Most of the time it seems like you stuck to those top hallways and wherever you spawned. Just bare in mind the bottom hallways are rarely used, and if you know the enemy are by the hallways (and preferably in battle) it’s a great way to sneak around them and take them from behind.

Anyway, it’s good you’re looing to improve! (Again, sorry if I’m coming off as harsh at all. I really, really don’t mean to)

If I’ll be super honest with you bud it was pretty bad. But that’s not to say that you can’t improve. When I started making stuff with Halo…my god was I terrible.

Still am.

That being said, lets start with the basics:

Capture Card:
I don’t know what you’re using there but I seriously advise you to upgrade to something like an HD PVR or Elgato. If you can’t afford one of those, go with the Dazzle. It’s not HD, but it does the trick in terms of widescreen and color.

I personally use an Elgato but before that I used an HD PVR and even further back I used a Dazzle. If you don’t have much space in your room then once again, go with the Elgato or Dazzle. PVR is a big box so it’s not the greatest thing to use.

Video Footage:
There isn’t a whole lot that I can say about that, I’d just follow what SilentA98 said and go from there.

Music:
Maybe this is just me, but never EVER use Blow Me Away. Almost EVERYONE uses that for montages/machinima and it always comes out looking bad. The song is great but it’s been used to the point where it’s painful to listen to. But like I said, that’s just me.

The Black and White thing:
I honestly doubt the Black and White thing you’re going for is by choice. Judging from the aspect ratio and quality of your video it seems as if you’re using an Easy Cap or something like that. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing but I can tell you from personal experience that it will put people off and make them not want to watch your content.

Colorful content is something people enjoy and while Black and White is enjoyable as well, in this day and age people expect everything to be in color unless they’re watching something from 1940. XI

Playing campy makes sense sometimes in swat. Good video brah.

Be careful with your music, if it copyright infringement, they’ll take away the audio from your video. Then you’ll have yourself a nice black and white silent film. You can’t use. It names in the music industry, you can only use royalty free music man, I suggest you google the term “royalty free”.

I know this because I’m also a amateur video maker lol. Nice video, but put commentary instead of music, and talk about something interesting like e3 or your opinion on halo 4 matchmaking. Ad make your screen size bigger dude, it’s kind of small. And no more black and white!

Actually, that is incorrect. You may use any song from the Halo series on YouTube with no issues as long as you aren’t earning money from it. The OP does not need to use Royalty Free Music.

There are ways that authorize you to use Halo music and earn revenue, such as getting permission of being contracted with a network like Machinima.

In the OP’s case, what he’s doing is fine. He doesn’t have to worry about what music he uses as long as he doesn’t earn anything. Be warned though OP, while Halo based music is fine you’ll find out in future that not everything is available for use. While you can still use music freely on YouTube the company that owns that song may decide to remove it even after it’s been online for a year or two.

Yeah, I was aware of Microsoft’s Game Content Usage stuff before making the vid. The truth about the B&W isn’t the capture card, it’s my TV. I use an old school TV, so instead of having YPBPR or HDMI, I only have RYW. It’s not even my capture card haha.

My buddy and I have been playing Halo, and he finally bought a Roxio capture card. He came over to show it off, and this is the result

When we’re at his place, I’ll try to get a color and HDMI quality vid. I’ll also keep in mind all of the advice that you guys gave. I knew this vid was nothing uber awesome, but I thought for a first vid, that I did decently.

Edit: Also, please leave comments on vid please!

Don’t try to make me look like I don’t know what I’m talking about. You said I was “incorrect”. Nothing I said was incorrect. You should have said “you forgot to mention that you can use halo music.” Which I did forget to add.

I’m not saying that at all. It was a poor choice of words that you (once again) decided to get offended by.

Also. If you want to get technical then this statement that you made:

> It names in the music industry, you can only use royalty free music man

Is incorrect. I was merely pointing out that while the OP should not use whatever music he feels like out of fear of getting strikes, he must not limit himself to poorly made Royalty Free Music when there are MANY artists out there who offer their music to people openly so long as they aren’t earning anything.

That is all I was pointing out, don’t make it seem as if you’re the only person who knows this stuff man. This is common knowledge when it comes to film making.

Thanks for the info Spearhead! I’ll openly admit that I’m a total noob to the film making scene, so the advice goes a long way. How does someone go about finding out if a song is available to use in this scenario?

Also, is anyone willing to give an in-depth analysis of my gameplay itself, such as at xx:xx, you did well, while during xx:xx, you did poorly for this or that reason? I’d really appreciate the tips from more seasoned players. I feel that I do really well sometimes, while I do poorly at other times. Being killed is normal for all pros, but I’m not always sure when I get killed in a pro manner, and when I get killed for being a noob LOL

Okay, so quick update for everyone. I have changed the name of the video from “SWAT B&W Edition: Episode #1” to simply say “SWAT B&W Edition”, and I am pleased to announce that I will no longer need to capture in black and white. All future recordings will be in color, and I will also be doing a commentary during my vids, instead of background music.

I think my next video will have commentary on my suggestions for Halo 5, as I have a really awesome idea. It’s top-secret until then, but I should be getting together with him soon for a huge gaming party. I’ll record it then.
